What is it with the end of October? Will the world end on Nov 1 or
something? I'm attending a different meeting called the Virtual
Opportunity Congress about big policy issues sponsored by state
governments and the DOCA. Any linkers at that one?

EC '97 - EMAIL BULLETIN FROM TRADEGATE ECA
THURSDAY 16 OCT 1997
---------------------------------------------
50 ORGANISATIONS AND 14 COUNTRIES PARTICIPATE
IN EC'97 ELECTRONIC DIRECTORY EXPO
---------------------------------------------
More than 50 organisations from 14 countries will participate in an
international expo demonstrating electronic directories and their role
in business and government at EC '97 - Tradegate ECA's annual conference
on electronic commerce - in Melbourne at the end of this month.
There will be live demonstrations of linked X.500 directories used to
support electronic commerce, showing in particular their international
interoperability and their use in security applications.
To effectively use electronic commerce, all large organisations will need
to employ X.500-compliant directories.
The EC '97 demonstration is the final phase of the global X.500 Directory
Challenge, a year-long project run by the World Electronic Messaging
Association (WEMA). Previous events were in Philadelphia (April) and
Maastricht, Holland (June).
"The demonstration will provide conference delegates with real-life
examples and the chance to experiment with Australian and overseas
directories, talk to expert users, and gain a better understanding of
the issues as they apply to their own organisations," said Peter
Blanchard, Marketing Manager for Tradegate ECA.
Several aspects will be world firsts including:
* Open Electronic Trading, or "Open EDI", showing the registration of a
company's EDI trading profile into a directory, using an Internet
browser and an e-form interface.
* Linking Government Agencies via the so-called 'Coloured Pages' -
seamless connection to government directories in different countries
and agencies. Participants include Australian GOLD (the Federal
Government On-line Directory), US GOLD (US Government), Canadian
Government , and Victorian State Government Directories.
* Security, including registering and issuing of X.509 certificates
by a Certification Authority, sending secure messages using
certificates stored in directories, digital signatures and encryption.
Australian developers of X.500 software products, including Telstra and
Datacraft, and users including the Australian Government Publishing
Service, have been at the forefront in the World Challenge.
Major funding for the project was contributed by the Federal Government's
Department of Industry, Science and Technology.
EC '97 will be held at the Melbourne Convention Centre - October 28 to 30.
