Not counting the vendor media releases, for products
launched/demonstrated/at least we're there, just WCIT alone, there are about
20 releases for the first two days. Oh, plus a bunch of ministerials.
George, the reason Adelaide is full of journalists is the same as the reason
so many newspapers are running huge and minutely detailed reports on the
congress: JUNKET! With the dailies and IDG banning vendor trips, journos
aren't getting the frequent flyer points they used to (and there's a lot of
work to do to replace Ansett FF points!).
However, the presence of Bill Clinton, the chance for publications to sign
on as a WCIT media sponsor (and therefore put out an advertising pitch), and
the assurance that there will be Important Government Announcements made at
the congress ... all of these things add up to a Really Good Excuse to blow
some budget on a big trip to Adelaide.
Now, having sent a bunch of vapid suit-chasers (the IT journalist equivalent
of ambulance-chasing!) to Adelaide, you must have something to report...even
if what you're reporting is merely a rehash of a paper supplemented by a
press release cut-and-paste.
Oh, the other reason so many pages are devoted to the WCIT Congress is that
to sign up as accredited media sponsors required a commitment to coverage.
IOW, contract conditions, not news value, are what determine the page count.

(Disclaimer: I'm not there, because I sent someone else; I retired from
journo-junkets when the kids arrived. Also I'm trying to protect my liver,
but that's another thread!)
