Quote from the story:

Yeah, and I'm a teapot called Erica.

The first Web monitoring product I saw was in 1995 at Interop in the US.
Back then, it was going to be huge. It's a perpetual "gunna" - gunna change
the world, gunna give companies control over Web usage, etc etc etc.

The downside is this: OK, some staff waste time on the Web. So we put in
monitoring software - and somebody else has to (a) receive the alerts and
(b) stop what they're doing to act on the alerts. Which boss wants to be the
one to have their time wasted? None of them. So it reverts to the network
administrator, who quickly finds a lot of other things that are more
important.

Every now and again, you see companies emerging with a strategy of picking
out a journalist to drip-feed. Janteknology gave us the "local angle" on
Code Red a couple of weeks back, through the same journalist (I think).

The strategy is:
1) "I'm just telling you this because..." or
2) "Got an exclusive for you..."

Interestingly, this strategy was once pursued by Spike. Ha!

Privacy on the desktop is under siege with the latest real-time software
giving
Australian managers the ammunition to tap staff on the shoulder and tell
them
their time is up.
