2) ilanetweb Developments
ASCOT via ilanetweb.
When using ASCOT via ilanetweb, you now have access to a wider range of
services. Apart from Australian company and business name searches, you will
also have access to land titles and other conveyancing documents and
bankruptcy searches. We are working with Lawpoint towards offering access
via the web, and hope to be able to offer this in the not-too-distant
future.
OCLC FirstSearch
FirstSearch now provides instant access to full-text from over 6,000
periodicals and more than 80 databases. Over 2,500 journals from 42
participating publishers are available for purchase on a per-article basis
through Electronic Collections Online. Due to a price rise,ILANET has had to
increase the cost of FirstSearch searches as of 1 July. Searches are now
$225 for a block of 100 searches. If you wish to use FirstSearch you must
first contact the ILANET Help Desk to purchase your FirstSearch passwords.
iSELECT
ilanetweb select for schools (iSELECT) offers access to databases chosen for
their relevance to the secondary school curriculum and ease of use. iSELECT
users have access to a range of free and charged-for databases, the
Infotrieve document delivery service, free resources and the full support
provided by the ILANET team. Thirty schools are now trialing iSELECT.

4)Copyright and the Tasini decision
A significant Supreme Court decision in the US regarding copyright will
affect Australians using Lexis Nexis, Dialog, Factiva and ProQuest. The case
was between the NY Times Co. Inc et al and Tasini et al with Jonathan
Tasini, representing the National Writers' Union, prevailing.
The full text of the decision can be found at the Cornell Law School index
of Supreme Court decisions.
http://supct.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/00-201.ZS.html
The decision "grants copyright ownership of the electronic reproduction of a
freelance author's work to the author, not the publisher of the original
print work, unless a contract exists between the author and publisher that
clearly spells out the transfer of those electronic rights".
Barbara Quint has written an analysis "Stop the trash trucks: A Tasini Case
Damage-Control Proposal" that can be read at:
http://www.infotoday.com/newsbreaks/nb010716-1.htm
Publishers responded to this decision by removing from their databases
articles written by freelancers who have now gained title at the expense of
exposure. This case may have surprising ramifications with the court ready
to impose "creative remedies" as the following findlaw commentary explains.

5) United States Copyright Search

9) The Myths of Missile Defence
With the military budget of the US higher now than during the Cold War and
three times as much as the military budgets of China and Russia combined the
question of why the preeminent superpower needs a missile defense system is
worth asking.
