I am not a teacher, but I can't see why Year 10 and above couldn't start
learning Java or Visual Basic and - most importantly - using them to solve
interesting problems. They are both very stable and very powerful platforms.
I guess it all gets back to having someone work out good course outlines
that set realistic learning goals and keep the students in a defined space,
so they don't get lost in all the details.

For example, with Visual Basic, it would be possible for even young students
to work directly with some of the most advanced visual effects technology
aka next generation games.) Fascinating effects can be achieved in a few
lines of code, since the powerful DirectX Libraries are available in VB.
