Since there have been many organisations who have been using Linux as
part of their commercial set up for many years (a large, readily
identified group is ISPs), I would suggest that the commercial use of
Linux has been very well established - and that before players such as
Red Hat cam on the scene.
I would agree that open source projects in general (and Linux in
particular) is not driven by the same marketing imperatives as
proprieatary software, but this does not make Linux non-commercial (just
better software :-).
