AIMING TO BUILD A BETTER NAPSTER
The KaZaa file-sharing program from FastTrack of Amsterdam is
far more elusive than Napster because it runs without a central
server or distribution point. The program also bypasses the
congestion hindering the Gnutella online file-sharing network.
FastTrack claimed that over six million copies of the KaZaa
program have been downloaded since it was released last April,
and CEO Niklas Zennstrom said there have been one million
downloads in the past week alone. A report from Webnoize
analysts concluded that, "FastTrack takes over where Napster
left off, setting high consumer standards for online media
distribution and a challenge for media." Zennstrom insisted
that he does not want FastTrack to inherit Napster's infamy,
and therefore he is working to secure rights for downloading
songs with European copyright holders.
