Get linked from other pages
If two pages of content were exactly the same, the page that was linked to more often from other sites and pages would be ranked higher in search results than the page that was not linked.
Ask other web publishers to include a link to your site.  Contact details for the site administrators are usually in the footer of the page.
In particular, you may want to be linked to from sites that are closely related to yours (for example, Faculty of Arts will want to be linked to from College of Arts and Social Sciences) and sites that are frequently used by your audience (at the ANU these might be ANU Home, Staff Home, Students Home, Study@ANU and College sites).
Use descriptive link names
Most search engines rate link text more highly than regular text.  Link text is what people click on to open a new page or site.
Use link names that describe what is being linked to &#45; for example, when linking to Jobs at the ANU, use something like ANU Job Opportunities rather than Click Here.
This not only improves your ranking, it is very helpful to readers of your site and increases accessibility for disabled and vision impaired audiences.
Use the title tag
Every page has a title &#45; this is the text that appears at the top of the web browser in the blue bar.&amp;nbsp; For example, the text in the blue bar at the top of your screen reflects the title of this page: Tips for Improving Search Result Ranking &#45; Marketing &amp;amp; Communications Division &#45; ANU. Often the title is followed by the name of the browser you are using such as Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Search Engines rate Titles higher than regular text so make sure your page has a descriptive title. At ANU it is standard practice to include ANU in your title, generally in the form: Page Title &#45; Area/Website Name &#45; ANU.
The title appears in the code of your web page between the title tags: &amp;lt;title&amp;gt;your title&amp;lt;/title&amp;gt;
Use audience preferred terms
Use words on your site that are most often used by your audience.
For example: If you use the term vehicles in your site, but your readers use cars instead, you might want to consider changing some of your content to reflect the more popular terminology (if your audience uses ANU search you could also make sure that commonly used terms appear in your metadata &#45; see Applying metadata to your pages).

Website Style Guidelines
This information should be used in conjunction with the ANU website style guidelines.
Templates &amp;amp; Stylesheets
All ANU websites using any form of the anu.edu.au domain (eg. info.anu.edu.au/mac, rspas.anu.edu.au or http://www.anu.edu.au/admin) are to use ANU web templates for their sites. No other basic design should be commissioned and all external designers must use ANU templates if doing work for ANU.
All webpages must link to the main&amp;nbsp;Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) at http://styles.anu.edu.au/anu_global_styles.css. The stylesheet must not be downloaded and stored on another server &#45; your webpages must link to this main style sheet. No supplemental styles of style sheets may be used without the approval of MAC (email requests to webstyle@anu.edu.au).

Colour Schemes
Websites must use either Corporate Blue or their College colour (as specified in the layout sections below).
Examples of the different colour schemes can be found at http://styles.anu.edu.au
For more detailed information about ANU colours see the Colours section of the Visual Identity Guide.
Typography
All fonts, font colours and font sizes must be as per the CSS stylesheet and template.
Headings within the content area of the page should be left aligned. Heading fonts should be defined as Arial, Helvetica, Sans&#45;Serif.
Adobe Rotis Semi Sans should only be used when included as part of an image file. All images that contain text must include that text as part of the &#39;alt&#39; tag for accessibility reasons.
Body text font should be defined as Verdana, Tahoma, Sans&#45;Serif. Stylesheets should be used, rather than HTML tag attributes, for formatting content.

Layout &#45; College &amp;amp; Divisional Websites
The area title should be the full name of the College or Division (eg &#39;ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences&#39;). The area title is noted in the code by the CSS class &#39;headTitle&#39;.
College web pages must use their College colour for the header. Divisional websites should use Corporate Blue.

Layout &#45; Areas, Faculties, Schools etc.
The area title should be the name of the area, school or faculty (eg &#39;Research School of Humanities&#39;). The area title is noted in the code by the CSS class &#39;headTitle&#39;.
Academic areas must also use the College colour for the coloured bar at the top, unless they have decided to adopt the Corporate Blue as the colour for all of their publications. In that case the top bar should be the ANU Corporate Blue as well.
All Area pages must display their College or Division name as a subheading within the header. The subheader should be positioned by adding the following code, if it is not already present, to the HTML template. It should be placed directly below the &#39;headTitle&#39; div in the HTML:

The default global navigation (Skip Navigation, ANU Home, Search ANU) should not be altered or removed. Skip Navigation must always be the first link as it is an important accessibility device. Additional links can included to the right of the default links.

The Marketing Office, OVC is responsible for the University&#39;s corporate identity and the publishing style of ANU publications and website content.

Activating your email signature in Microsoft Outlook

In Microsoft Outlook, select Tools &amp;gt; Options &amp;gt; Mail Format
In the Signatures area, select the Signatures button then New to create a new signature
Type in a name for the title of the new signature
Select Next &amp;gt;
Type the signature included below, with the following rules: 

Use Courier New at 10pt size, left aligned, not bold
Use the return key to create a space at start of your signature
Create the dividing line at the start and end of the signature using equals (=) signs
DO NOT use acronyms &#45; people outside ANU may not know what they mean
The Australian National University must start with The
Delete rows (such as your specific section) if they are not applicable in your case
Include http:// in your area URL if the URL DOES NOT start with www
You may add other messages under the ending divider bar of your signature, such as disclaimers where necessary, links to webpages, upcoming events or brochures. Do not add non&#45;ANU proprietary items such as &#39;Thoughts for the Day&#39; or similar. 


Select Finish then OK. On the Mail Format tab, under the Signatures section, make sure the correct signature is selected for New Messages and Replies and Forwards.
Select OK to return to your email. Test your new signature by creating a new email &#45; the signature should now appear.

Any Australian individual or organisation publishing information on the world wide web, or any individual or organisation placing or maintaining a web page on an Australian server, is covered by legislation that requires provision of equal access for people with a disability.
Digital technology can provide benefits to many people with disabilities and disadvantages by providing access to information and services (previously unavailable) in formats and locations which they can use. Web pages should be suitable for all users, irrespective of their physical limitations (eg vision, hearing, mobility, literacy or cognitive impairment), environmental limitations (eg noise), and/or technical circumstances (eg slow modems, older browser versions, low resolution displays and monochrome monitors).
The Australian National University is committed to ensuring accessibility of its website for people with disabilities, older users and users with limited computing equipment. All University web sites must conform to the standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) as the baseline standard for all ANU web pages. The standard is set out at http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI&#45;WEBCONTENT/. Deans and Directors must accept responsibility for the accessibility of websites published by all staff and students in their areas.
All ANU websites should contain &#39;Skip Navigation&#39; links to allow for easier navigation. More information is available at http://styles.anu.edu.au.
Guidelines
The W3C guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with disabilities and to maximise the use of assistance technologies such screen readers and wireless pointing devices. This includes the following points:
General:

provide a text equivalent for every non&#45;text element, including images, graphical representations of text (including symbols), image map regions, animations, applets and programmatic objects, ASCII art, frames, scripts, images used as list bullets, spacers, graphical buttons, sounds (played with or without user interaction), stand&#45;alone audio files, audio tracks of video, and video 
ensure that all information conveyed with colour is also available without colour, for example from context or mark&#45;up 
clearly identify changes in the natural language of a document&#39;s text and any text equivalents (eg captions) 
organise documents so they may be read without style sheets &#45; for example, when an HTML document is rendered without associated style sheets, it must still be possible to read the document 
ensure that equivalents for dynamic content are updated when the dynamic content changes 
avoid causing the screen to flicker 
use the clearest and simplest language appropriate for a site&#39;s content. Images and image maps: 
provide redundant text links for each active region of a server&#45;side image map 
provide client&#45;side image maps instead of server&#45;side image maps except where the regions cannot be defined with an available geometric shape. 

Tables:

identify row and column headers with mark&#45;up tags 
for data tables with two or more logical levels of row or column headers, use mark&#45;up to associate data cells and header cells. 

Frames:

title each frame to facilitate frame identification and navigation 
provide a non&#45;frame alternative for each page using frames. 

Applets and scripts:

ensure that pages are useable when scripts, applets, or other programmatic objects are turned off or not supported. If this is not possible, provide equivalent information on an alternative accessible page. 

Multimedia:

provide an auditory description of the important information for the visual track of a multimedia presentation 
for any time&#45;based multimedia presentation (eg. a movie or animation), synchronise equivalent alternatives (eg. captions or auditory descriptions of the visual track) with the presentation.

Testing websites for accessibility
There are many tools available to help web authors check their web pages and identify changes needed to make them accessible to users with disabilities. Ideally, users should be involved in website testing.
A range of freeware and shareware evaluation tools for web content accessibility are available at the Web Accessibility Initiative website (http://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/existingtools.html).
At a minimum, the following validation methods must be applied:

use automated tools to analyse web pages for accessibility and browser compatibility 
use a text&#45;only browser or emulator 
use multiple graphic browsers, with &#45; graphics disabled &#45; sound disabled &#45; no mouse &#45; frames, scripts, style sheets and applets disabled.

To have the content listed on ANU on iTunes you must:

meet the technical requirements for audio, video or PDF files
include metadata within media files
have an RSS feed (an XML file) that:   

conforms to the RSS 2.0 specification
includes the recommended iTunes RSS tags
contains pointers to each lecture/event. 



Audio
Audio files must be AAC or MP3 format with appropriate file extensions (.m4a, .mp3).
For best results during playback, Apple recommends converting MP3 files greater than 32 megabytes (MB) to AAC format.
For AAC audio files, Apple recommends the following specifications:

Audio Format: Baseline Low&#45;Complexity Profile with AAC&#45;LC (Music)
Data Rate: Up to 160 Kbps
Channels: Stereo in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov formats
Output Sample Rate: 48 kHz
Encoding Quality: Better

Video
Video files must be MPEG&#45;4 format with H.264 compression and appropriate file extensions (.mp4, .m4v, .mov).
For best results with iPod, Apple recommends using MPEG&#45;4 with H.264 compression with the following specifications:

Video Format: MPEG&#45;4 with H.264
Data Rate: Up to 1.5 Mbps
Image Size: 640 x 480 pixels
Frame Rate: 30 frames per second
Key Frame: Every 24 frames
Audio Tracks: Baseline Low&#45;Complexity Profile with AAC&#45;LC audio up to 160 Kbps

If you are using QuickTime to create and edit video content, it is recommended that you export your videos by choosing &quot;Movie to iPod&quot; from the Export pop&#45;up menu in QuickTime Pro.
PDF
You can also use iTunes U to distribute Portable Document Format (PDF) files. While Apple doesn&#39;t have any specifications for PDF files, they should be saved at the smallest possible file size to make the file quick and easy to download.
Metadata in Media Files
Metadata is data about data. In addition to putting metadata on web pages, you can also embed it in files. All media assets downloadable via ANU on iTunes U must include metadata.
An easy way to embed metadata into a file on a Windows machine is to right click on the file and then select Properties &amp;gt; Summary. You&#39;ll be able to edit the information associated with each field.
Both Mac and Windows users can use iTunes to add metadata to files. To add metadata, select the file in the iTunes Library and choose File &amp;gt; Get Info. Note: iTunes does not write metadata to PDF files.
There are programs available that will allow you to batch process metadata. These include:

Lostify (video files, Mac) http://lostify.com/

When entering metadata for MP3 files, the property fields should be completed as follows:

Artist = Speaker or Lecturer
Album Title = Series (such as ANU&#45;Toyota Public Lecture Series). If there is no particular series just enter the name of the College/Centre/School.
Year = the year the lecture was performed
Genre = The Australian National University
Title = whatever the podcast title is
Comments = Brief description, should include &quot;&amp;copy; The Australian National University&quot;

RSS iTunes Namespace Declaration
When using the iTunes tags, you must add a namespace declaration as the second line in your feed xml, like this:
&amp;lt;rss xmlns:itunes=&quot;http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast&#45;1.0.dtd&quot; version=&quot;2.0&quot;&amp;gt;
The namespace declaration points to a document that defines the iTunes tags. Without the declaration, the tags are meaningless.
Note that the namespace definition is case sensitive, and the previous location of the namespace had capital letters in it. The old namespace definition is still supported, but the new (all lowercase) definition is preferred.
Text Encoding
Please use UTF&#45;8 encoding for your feed. Other encodings are not guaranteed to work in iTunes.
All values should be plain text (no markup or HTML). Values are limited to 255 characters, except for &amp;lt;itunes:summary&amp;gt; which can be up to 4,000 characters. Whitespace in values is significant, ie it will show in iTunes, so don&#39;t add leading or trailing whitespace to your values. CDATA sections are strongly discouraged.

The file extension of the URL attribute of this tag is used to determine if an item should appear in the Podcast directory. Supported extensions include &quot;m4a&quot;, &quot;mp3&quot;, &quot;mov&quot;, &quot;mp4&quot;, &quot;m4v&quot;, and &quot;pdf&quot;.
The length attribute is the file size in bytes. Find this information in the files properties (on a Mac, &quot;Get Info&quot; and refer to the size row).
The type element depends upon the type of file the enclosure refers to. Common files and their MIME type extensions are listed in the following table.

Every &amp;lt;item&amp;gt; should have a globally unique identifier that never changes. When you add episodes to your feed, guids are compared in case sensitive fashion to determine which episodes are new. If you omit the guid for an episode, the episode url will be used instead.
&amp;lt;itunes:author&amp;gt;
The content of this tag is shown in the Artist column in iTunes. If the tag is not present, iTunes uses the contents of the &amp;lt;author&amp;gt; tag. If &amp;lt;itunes:author&amp;gt; is not present at the feed level, iTunes will use the contents of &amp;lt;managingEditor&amp;gt;.
&amp;lt;itunes:block&amp;gt;
Use this inside a &amp;lt;channel&amp;gt; element to prevent the entire podcast from appearing in the iTunes Podcast directory. Use this inside an &amp;lt;item&amp;gt; element to prevent that episode from appearing in the iTunes Podcast directory. For example, you may want a specific episode blocked from iTunes if its content might cause the feed to be removed from iTunes.
If this tag is present and set to &quot;yes&quot; (case insensitive), that means to block the feed or the episode. If the tag&#39;s value is any other value, including empty string, it&#39;s indicated as a signal to unblock the feed or episode. At the feed level, if there is no block tag, then the block status of the feed is left unchanged. At the episode level, if there is no block tag, it is the same as if a block=no were present.
&amp;lt;itunes:category&amp;gt;
iTunes U is extending its RSS feed support to include the ability to specify category information for each track included in a feed. In order to coexist with the iTunes Store feed specification, iTunes U is defining a new namespace for RSS feeds, with a namespace URI of &quot;http://www.itunesu.com/feed&amp;gt;&quot; and a namespace prefix of &quot;itunesu&quot;.  In order to convey generic RSS 2.0 data, iTunes Store data, and iTunes U data, the opening tag of the root &quot;rss&quot; node of a feed document would look like the following:

If more than one instance of the &quot;itunesu:category&quot; nodes is found in a given &quot;item&quot; node, it will not be considered an invalid feed structure, but at this time iTunes U will only consider the first instance.  If there is no instance of &quot;itunesu:category&quot; or the first instance is improper then it will be assumed that there is no category information for the track and any previous category information for the track cached within iTunes U will be removed.  An improper &quot;itunesu:category&quot; node would be one without an &quot;itunesu:code&quot; attribute or one with a code that does not map to an iTunes U category.
Below is a list of iTunes U category codes and their associated category names as currently defined. In the future, an up&#45;to&#45;date mapping of category codes and names can be found in the iTunes U online documentation and web services XSD&#39;s.

The tag can be formatted HH:MM:SS, H:MM:SS, MM:SS, or M:SS (H = hours, M = minutes, S = seconds). If an integer is provided (no colon present), the value is assumed to be in seconds. If one colon is present, the number to the left is assumed to be minutes, and the number to the right is assumed to be seconds. If more than two colons are present, the numbers furthest to the right are ignored.
&amp;lt;itunes:explicit&amp;gt;
This tag should be used to indicate whether or not your podcast contains explicit material. The three values for this tag are &quot;yes&quot;, &quot;no&quot;, and &quot;clean&quot;.
If you populate this tag with &quot;yes&quot;, an &quot;explicit&quot; parental advisory graphic will appear next to your podcast artwork on the iTunes Music Store, and in the Name column in iTunes. If the value is &quot;clean&quot;, the parental advisory type is considered Clean, meaning that no explicit language or adult content is included anywhere in the episodes, and a &quot;clean&quot; graphic will appear. If the explicit tag is present and has any other value (eg &quot;no&quot;) you see no indicator &#45; blank is the default advisory type.
&amp;lt;itunes:keywords&amp;gt;
This tag allows users to search on a maximum of 12 text keywords. Use commas to separate keywords.
&amp;lt;itunes:subtitle&amp;gt;
The contents of this tag are shown in the Description column in iTunes. The subtitle displays best if it is only a few words long.
&amp;lt;itunes:summary&amp;gt;
The contents of this tag are shown in a separate window that appears when the &quot;circled i&quot; in the Description column is clicked. It also appears on the iTunes page for your podcast. This field can be up to 4000 characters. If &amp;lt;itunes:summary   is not included, the contents of the &amp;lt;description   tag are used.
&amp;lt;language&amp;gt;
Because iTunes operates sites worldwide, it is critical to specify the language of a podcast. Accepted values are those in the ISO 639&#45;1 Alpha&#45;2 list (two&#45;letter language codes, some with possible modifiers, such as &quot;en&#45;us&quot;).
&amp;lt;pubDate&amp;gt;
This tag specifies the date and time when an episode was released. The format for the content should be per RFC 2822; eg:

Testing Your Feed
When you have created your RSS feed and posted it to a server with a publicly addressable URL (ie, not behind a firewall), you should test your feed to see if it works with iTunes:
1. Launch iTunes. 2. In the Advanced menu, select Subscribe to Podcast. 3. Enter your feed URL in the text box and click OK.
iTunes displays your Podcast playlist, which shows all of the podcasts to which you have subscribed. Next to the new podcast subscription, you should see an orange circle, which indicates that iTunes is downloading your most recent episode. When the orange circle disappears, you should be able to see your podcast title, a list of all the episodes referenced in your feed, and a check next to the most recent episode, indicating that it has been successfully downloaded. Double&#45;click on the episode to play it in iTunes. If you can successfully play the episode, then your feed is working and you ask MAC to add your podcast to ANU on iTunes U.
If the orange circle is replaced by an &quot;i&quot; in a black circle, iTunes encountered a problem with your feed or episode. You should troubleshoot your episode and feed before submitting it. Please do not submit your feed until you can successfully subscribe using the Advanced menu.
Linking to Your Podcast
You can also create links directly to your podcasts and share those on your website or in email. There are two linking methods:
iTunes Store Link: The following link goes directly to your podcast page in iTunes, where users will have the opportunity to subscribe to the podcast. This link can be found for any podcast by control + clicking (or right clicking in Windows) the podcast&#39;s art on its page in the iTunes Store: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=FEEDID
Note that a shorter but functionally identical link is also available: http://www.itunes.com/podcast?id=FEEDID
This is the preferred method among podcasters, because it results in an action (the user clicking on the Subscribe button in the iTunes Store) that is registered by iTS and will drive your podcast up the various automated charts.
Direct Subscribe Link: The following link automatically subscribes the user to the podcast in iTunes. Note that this method fails for Windows users who do not have iTunes installed, so it should be clearly noted that the link is intended for subscription with iTunes.

Also note that this method will not push your podcast up the various charts in the iTunes Store. It is a direct call to the user&#39;s iTunes client software and sends no information to the iTunes Store. If you want to increase the visibility of your podcast, we recommend that your web site and other marketing materials use the iTunes Store link described above.
Issues with your Podcast Feed
iTunes should update your listing at least once every 24 hours. If you made changes more than 24 hours ago that are not yet reflected in your iTunes listing, there is a good chance that your feed has broken. When iTunes encounters a broken feed, it ignores the feed and continues to display the old data. If you notice a problem with your feed that you cannot resolve on your end, please contact MAC.
Removing Your Feed
If you are no longer updating your podcast and you want it removed from ANU on iTunes U, please contact MAC before the feed is removed from your servers.

Apple has several requirements regarding how you may promote content on the iTunes U site.
