{satopic_overview}What Goals are we trying to achieve?
Goals are high level things such as:

Increase student numbers
Increase the number of PhD students
Raise the awareness of the School

What are our Objectives?
Objectives are more detailed and should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed.
For example:

Increase student numbers in the Bachelor of Architecture by 10% by 2011
Have an average of 2 PhD students per department academic staff member by 2012
Have 50 media mentions by staff in the department per year in 2009
Generate 25 applications for the new program for 2010

Situation Analysis
It is a good idea to briefly describe what the current situation and outlook is in terms of factors that will influence the plan and strategies. It is most likely to be a general narrative and could include comments on the political environment, current situation with regards to students (eg. PhD students are 30% of student population and rising/falling), economic outlook, drivers of the University's reputation, trends in relevant factors (eg student enrolments, median UAI entry), competitive position and trends, etc.
What Strategies will we use?
Strategies describe how the objectives will be reached. For example:

Raise the profile of the Bachelor of Architecture
Develop the capacity within the Department to relate to and utilise the media
Use on-campus experiences to promote ANU to targeted prospective students

The plan should contain strategies which address each of the elements identified in the SWOT analysis (below).
In traditional marketing plans, strategies would be grouped by the 4 P's of marketing: Product, Price, Place (Distribution) and Promotion.
In the University context, there tends to be little flexibility in a number of those elements (eg. programs are predefined, prices for domestic students are fixed through HECS-HELP, and ANU has one campus), and hence often the focus of the plan will be on communications.
SWOT Analysis
When developing strategies, a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) Analysis is a helpful tool.
Strengths and weaknesses are often internal to the University, opportunities and threats will tend to be external.
For example:

Strengths:

Strong reputation of ANU
ANU ‘On-campus' experience
First year accommodation guarantee

Weaknesses

Shortage of on-campus accommodation
Competition between Colleges for same students
Lack of market knowledge and market research
Image of ANU tied to poor image of Canberra

Opportunities

New sources of funding for PhD scholarships
New, more approachable Government

Threats

Declining local cohort of prospective students
Catastrophic event damages ANU reputation
Fall in ANU ranking

Implementation Activities
Implementation activities are the action plans for implementing the strategies. They need to be sufficiently detailed to allocate resources, budgets, and to monitor progress. They should contain timeframes and allocate responsibilities. For example:

Create a webpage explaining the new offering by June 2009 (J. Smith)
Review University policy regarding students remaining in Hall accommodation beyond 1st year (R. Williams by March 2009)
Undertake focussed student recruitment campaign in regional Victoria in 2009 (F. Nerk)
Identify and attend 3 relevant conferences to identify potential PhD candidates (S. Pale)

Communications Plan
A sample communications plan is included in the Templates and Resources section below.

{satopic_overview}
Introduction
The Australian National University hosts numerous official VIP visitors each year from across Australia and around the world.
VIP visits often originate from the Vice-Chancellor's office or from a senior officer in one of the Schools, Faculties or Centres - but in all cases, such visits should be advised to the VIP Visits and Protocol officer as soon as they are in prospect.
The University has a full-time VIP Visits & Protocol Officer who coordinates the visits and liaises with the visitors and external agencies.
Services provided by the VIP Visits Office
The role of the VIP Visits & Protocol Officer is to manage VIP visits, especially those involving meetings with the University Executive and with Deans, Directors and Heads of other areas of the University, and to advise on Protocol issues relating to VIP events on campus.
The VIP Visits & Protocol Officer is responsible for oversight of the details and arrangements so that each official VIP's visit to The Australian National University is a smooth and successful one. The arrangements can often be very involved, covering an extensive program of meetings on campus, meal arrangements, publicity, accommodation, transportation and official gifts. They may also involve liaison with external agencies such as the Office of Ceremonial and Hospitality in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Australian Protective Services. The Officer acts as the point of contact on behalf of the University, managing correspondence with the VIP visitors and liaison with external agencies, including government departments and diplomatic missions, in order to ensure a consistently high-quality delivery of service to visitors.
The VIP Visits & Protocol Officer can also assist in the organisation of a separate program for a spouse who may not be included in a VIP program. The VIP Visits & Protocol Officer will also advise and assist in the arrangements for a special function where VIP guests are to be present. Call the Officer for further help or information.

{satopic_overview}About the Collection
Please refer to the ANU Art Collection webpage.
Distribution of Artworks

While there is a high demand throughout the University for artworks and it is difficult to accommodate all requests, we do endeavour to provide artworks in approved areas when possible. Artworks are on temporary loan to your area. It is the policy of the Collection to enable as many people as possible to share the experience of having ANU artworks in their work areas. To register your request for artwork contact the Collections Officer (details below).

Guidelines for Care & Treatment of Artworks
The Art Collection has been developed over many years through donations and acquisitions. It includes many extremely important works by major Australian artists, and is regarded as a significant national collection.
These guidelines are designed to protect works of art in the ANU Art Collection. Staff members in areas that house artworks belonging to the ANU Art Collection are considered to share responsibility for the care and security of those artworks. Only Collections staff are authorized to handle or relocate artworks.
There are specific responsibilities that accompany the placement of artworks throughout the ANU. To ensure that the Art Collection is properly maintained and conserved it is important that all staff are aware of the following guidelines:

Artworks will only be installed in locations approved by the Collections Officer. These areas must comply with preventative conservation guidelines.
Please do not move artworks. The Collections Officer must be notified if you want artworks in your work area rehung or relocated.
The Collections Officer must be notified immediately if any damage occurs to an artwork.
With prior notification, the Collections Officer may relocate artworks from areas at any time. In exceptional cases, the work may be removed without notice.
The Collections Officer must be notified if any renovations, painting or repairs are to be undertaken in an area housing an artwork. In this case, artworks will be relocated to the Art Collection storeroom for safety until all work is completed.
The Collections Officer must be notified in case of theft, fire, flood or any other unforeseen risk that may cause damage to artworks.
Please avoid placing objects against artworks or within a dangerous proximity of them.
Three-dimensional objects, including glass, ceramic and wood pieces, are not to be used as functional objects; eg.: vases, paperweights, containers.
Please notify the Collections Officer when you permanently vacate your office so that new staff can be advised of their responsibilities regarding artworks located in their area.
The Collections Officer is not responsible for the hanging or installation of artworks and objects that do not form part of the Central Collection. This includes posters, clocks, notice boards, reproduction prints, etc.

Enquiries & Issues
Members of staff should contact the Collections Officer (details below) for any issues to do with:

Selecting Collection artworks for their work spaces
Moving artworks from one location to another
Returning artworks to storage
Storing of artworks temporarily during office renovations for their safe keeping
Any other ANU Art Collection related issue.
