The First ASIALEX Regional Symposium

This will be the first regional symposium of the Asian Association for Lexicography (ASIALEX) which was established in March, 1997. The major objective of the Association is to foster scholarly and professional activities in the field of Lexicography in Asia. The symposium proposed is the first step that ASIALEX shall take to achieve the purpose. It is hoped that the Association will be able to hold symposia of various themes once every two years in various parts of Asia in future.

Call for Papers

Abstracts (c. 250-300 words) are invited for individual papers related to the following areas:

1. National experience on lexicography or dictionary compilation

2. Bilingual lexicography

Abstracts (in English or Chinese) must be received by October 30th (second call). Acceptances will be sent out before November 15th, 1998.

Venue: Guangdong University of Foreign Studies

It is located in Guangzhou, a city in Guangdong (Canton), which is 3 hours by train and 45 minutes by plane from Hong Kong. There are direct flights to the city.

Many of the senior staff of the University specialise in lexicographical research and several major dictionaries have been produced. Moreover, lexicography is taught as a specialist subject at post-graduate level.

Dates: 14th January (Thursday) - 16th January (Saturday) 1999

Conference fee: US$172/HK$1,340

The fee includes the following:
1) Registration fee
2) 3 nights' accommodation (a single room from 13th to 15th inclusive). Cost of an extra night is US$24. Please add the amount onto the fee when preparing your payment.
3) 3 meals a day for 3 days, including a banquet dinner
4) Local transportation
5) A conference pack
