Current ANU Students

The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) provides tutorial assistance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the ANU. Under this scheme, you can be provided with up to two hours a week per course of one-on-one tutorial assistances with your studies.

To apply for the scheme, complete an ITAS application form and send it to the ITAS Coordinator at the Jabal Centre.

Becoming an ITAS Tutor

Being a tutor for the ITAS scheme is a great way of getting tutoring experience while also making some money and meeting and helping out your fellow students. The Jabal Centre keeps a register of tutors who are interested in providing paid tutoring under the scheme. If you would like to register for possible future involvement with the scheme, please submit an ITAS Tutor Application form to the Jabal Centre. (Hard copies of the form are also available at the Jabal Centre, Lower Melville Hall.)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tutors are particularly encouraged to apply.

All applicants need to be at least two years ahead of the student they are tutoring and be able to creatively and sensitively provide effective tutoring to students.

Potential ITAS tutors are asked to attend a workshop prior to commencing tutoring.

Current remuneration as at November 2007 is $65.15 per hour for individual one-on-one tuition and $97.67 for group tuition.

Guide for Tutors

To help tutors structure tutorials with their students and to agree on what goals you both have for the tutorial sessions, the Jabal Centre asks that you complete a work program in consultation with your student. This work program will help you and your student focus your work and help your student plan their studies. Please complete the work program form within two weeks of starting tutorials and return it to the ITAS Coordinator at the Jabal Centre, Lower Melville Hall.

We also ask tutors to complete a progress report at the end of each semester or period of tutorials. This helps both you and the Jabal Centre see how your student is fairing with their study goals and might suggest other ways of helping your student. Please complete the progress report at the end of each semester or period of tutoring and return it to the ITAS Coordinator at the Jabal Centre.
