The
Jabal story
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are still under-represented
in higher education and even more under-represented in higher degree
programs. The Australian National University (ANU), through the Jabal
Centre and the Indigenous Australian Postgraduate Program, aims to redress
this anomaly.
In 1988, ANU established on its campus an Indigenous Australian Liaison
Office and Student Centre, now known as the Jabal Centre, to respond
to the need for dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island support
services within the ANU Community.
The name 'Jabal' means the 'large assembly of groups from widely separated
areas.'
The Jabal Centre's logo is an artwork produced by an ANU Indigenous
student, Danie Mellor, and depicts this idea, with the blue and white
dreaming tracks leading into a central meeting place. It is along these
paths that students travel and meet at Jabal. From this central ground,
students branch out into different areas from the University into their
chosen fields of learning.
