2003 Annual Theme

Culture, Environment and Human Rights

Confirmed conferences and projects give an indication of the extent of the coverage, which ranges from an historical examination of science and technology to a philosophical engagement with issues of biomedicine, genetic engineering and environmental change, questioning what it may be to be a human being in the twenty-first century. Projects already under way include an examination of the cultural history of complex ecosystems, including from an indigenous perspective; a project on gardens and landscapes, real and metaphorical; contemporary Asia-Pacific museums as sites for sustainable economic development and cultural survival; and art addressing issues of human rights. The Humanities Research Centre is also working with our sister institution, the National Europe Centre, on a series of events entitled "The Europeans", which is not restricted to the 2003 theme. See project announcement.

Interdisciplinary Research Projects being undertaken include:

  • The Enlightenment World
  • European Encounters with the Exotic
  • Gardens and Landscapes (including rainforests)
  • The Europeans
  • Contemporary Asia-Pacific Art, Culture, and Museums
  • Human Rights
  • Art and Social Change
