Dialogues on Paintings between
conservators, curators and art historians.
The HRC theme for 1992, "The Articulate Surface"
provided the perfect impetus for a professional discussion
to evolve from the close and careful study of the surfaces
of paintings. It gave a platform for the first significant
discussion of the contribution of such collaborative research
into the study of Australian art history, knowledge of the
histories of the works in Australian art museums and private
collections. Thus "The Articulate Surface" offers
an informed look at paintings. Placed in such a context,
the painting's surface becomes a more articulate surface
with the potential to inform professional research and to
reward the public gaze.
