Travel vaccinations

If you are planning to travel overseas, you should make a appointment with the Health Service to discuss with a Doctor your vaccination needs, which will vary depending on your destination and the vaccines available. There may also be specific warnings and contraindications which apply to vaccinations which the doctor will need to discuss with you.

Travellers may need to consider having the following vaccinations:

Hepatitis A - strongly advised for travellers to many destinations. This is normally given in a three dose regime and full vaccination protection lasts for greater than ten years

Hepatitis B - this vaccination is usually a three injection schedule. It is now included with routine childhood immunisations, but is often also required for adults in various occupations and for travellers. It is also available as a combined vaccination with Hepatitis A, which is strongly advised for travellers

Typhoid - this can be given as an injection or tablets - protection lasts for 3 years. It is strongly advised for many destinations

Cholera - this is an oral vaccination which is advised for some specific destinations

Meningitis - this vaccination lasts for a year and is advised for some specific destinations

Malaria prophylaxis - malaria is a danger in many areas of the world. Protection with tablets is strongly advised for many destinations.
