Courses in Applied Statistics

The Statistical Consulting Unit's courses in applied statistics

  • are designed for research students and staff, but are also available to external clients
  • use a case-study, problem oriented approach to teaching
  • do not require sophisticated mathematical skills
  • provide an introduction to modern statistical practice
  • provide an introduction to the underlying modern statistical thinking and concepts used in many analyses

Aim of Courses

The aim of the courses is to promote sound statistical thinking and an awareness of appropriate modern statistical practice, leading to informative analyses. This is of particular value to students who utilise statistical concepts and methods in research theses as well as those seeking to enhance their wider statistical understanding.

How you will benefit

Each course provides a practical introduction to various statistical methods. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion with course leaders on appropriate methods of analysing data, and help will be provided with interpreting results.

Understanding the basic concepts and issues makes the consultation process more efficient and effective. We recommend that all students who intend involving the SCU in their project attend some relevant courses.

Pedagogy

  • we use a case-study problem-orientated approach to teaching
  • we choose the case studies to be of general interest to participants
  • course notes are provided for all courses
  • in the 18 hour courses, you will spend about half the time working on examples on PCs. A number of statistical packages are available on the ANU computers. The tutors are able to help students using R, GenStat and SPSS software.
  • the 9 hour courses comprise lectures and class discussions only

Pre-Requisites

We expect those who attend the courses to

  • be currently involved in quantitative research
  • have some (minimal) knowledge of mathematics
  • have some familiarity with mathematical notation
  • have attended all prerequisite courses (see individual course information)
Note: There is a strict limit on class size so early registration is advisable.

It is the responsibility of participants to read the course descriptions carefully to ensure that the courses they choose meet their needs.

Disclaimer

The ANU does not warrant that any participant on a course will achieve any particular level of proficiency in the subject matter as a result of the course. The ANU assumes no responsibility to any person for any use of information presented in the courses.
