DOMESTIC MID-YEAR RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS

A limited amount of ANU Scholarships have been made available for a mid year round in 2009.
There will be a combination of an ANU Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for Doctoral Study and ANU University Research Scholarships (Domestic).

ALAN SARGESON MERIT SCHOLARSHIP IN CHEMICAL SCIENCES (RSC)

(SUPPLEMENTARY SCHOLARSHIP)

The purpose of this scholarship is to attract Australian and New Zealand students of high calibre to pursue postgraduate research within the Research School of Chemistry and the Department of Chemistry. The scholarship provides for payment of a supplementary stipend to an outstanding holder of an APA or ANU PhD Scholarship or other stipend allowance scholarship for the duration of that scholarship.

Stipend: A$5,000.00 per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extension

Applications Close: Not applicable (N/A). Top-up scholarship recipients hold a primary scholarship (ie an Australian Postgraduate Award or ANU University Research Scholarship) and are selected for a top-up scholarship on the basis of merit.

How To Apply: As this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding applicant for an APA or ANU PhD or similar stipend scholarship, it is not necessary to complete a separate application form.

ANU VICE-CHANCELLOR'S SCHOLARSHIP FOR DOCTORAL STUDY

The ANU Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship for Doctoral Study is a highly prestigious scholarship offered to the highest ranking eligible applicant in each of the ANU Colleges. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis. However, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship may be awarded for part-time study.

Stipend: A$25,000.00 (2009 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Other Benefits: Research Support ($15,000 per annum provided to the college in which the scholar is enrolled to support their research); travel to Canberra; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extension

Take Up By: 31 March. It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 March in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to the approval of the prospective supervisor, Head of Department and Dean/Director, a later start date may be possible. The date by which a scholarship must be taken up in a particular instance will be made clear in the formal letter of offer for the scholarship.

  ANU GLENN SANECKI ALPINE SCHOLARSHIP

The Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University and the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) is seeking applications for the Glenn Sanecki Alpine Scholarship. The scholarship is to support a PhD student undertaking research in the field of the physical or biological sciences in the alpine and sub-alpine areas of Kosciuszko National Park, or in, or partly in, other alpine/sub-alpine areas of Australia (subject to agreement with ANU and DECC). All topic ideas within this remit will be considered. Alternatively, ANU and DECC have identified the area of the effects of climate change on rabbit and hare populations in a sub-alpine/alpine environment as a potential study topic. See attached/below for further details.

AUSTRALIAN POSTGRADUATE AWARDS (APA)

The Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) makes available each year a number of awards for study by research leading to a higher degree. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis, although, subject to strict criteria laid down by DIISR, the award may be offered for part-time study.

Stipend: A$22,500 (2010 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Other Benefits: Travel to Canberra from within Australia; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extension. The award may be offered for part-time study in very special circumstances prescribed by DIISR

Take Up Between: 1 January and 31 March in year for which the scholarship is awarded

INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

The ANU each year normally offers one scholarship to an indigenous Australian to undertake graduate study.

Stipend: A$22,500 (2010 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Other Benefits: Travel to Canberra from within Australia; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance.

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible extension (PhD)

Take Up Between: 1 January and 31 March in the year of award

Number Offered: Up to one scholarship on offer.

Payment Conditions: Tenure is dependent upon the program for which the scholarship is awarded.

Eligible Program(s): PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research, MPhil, Professional Doctorate by Coursework (and also Master by Coursework and Research, Master by Coursework, Graduate Diploma)

Eligibility Criteria: Australian citizens; Permanent residents of Australia. Applications are only open to Indigenous Australians

Applicants for a research scholarship must hold a Bachelors degree with at least upper second-class honours, or equivalent prior studies including some research work.

Applicants for a coursework scholarship must hold at least a Bachelors degree and should also complete the Postgraduate Research Course and/or Scholarship application form, as well as the Postgraduate Coursework Application Form for Local Students. Some ANU coursework programs require application through the University Admissions Centre. Details of these programs and how to apply for them are provided on the Postgraduate Coursework Application Form.

Before lodging an application, applicants applying for admission to a coursework program should first check the closing date of the program, as the closing date for some coursework programs may be earlier than the scholarship closing date.

INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN RECONCILLIATION PhD SCHOLARSHIPS

Stipend: A$22,500 (2010 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Other Benefits: Travel to Canberra from within Australia; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance.

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible extension

Take Up Between: 1 January and 31 March in the year of award

Number Offered: Up to one scholarship on offer.

Eligible Program(s): PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research

JCSMR offers the following scholarships: the Doherty Scholarship (Clinical Scholarship), the Fenner Merit Scholarship, and the Gordon Ada PhD Scholarship in Immunology or Virology. 

Doherty Scholarship (Clinical Scholarship)

The Doherty Scholarship (Clinical Scholarship) is to attract Australian students of high calibre with clinical qualifications to pursue postgraduate research involving a clinical research project for a PhD degree at the JCSMR.

Gordon Ada PhD Scholarship In Immunology Or Virology

The Gordon Ada PhD Scholarship in Immunology or Virology is a supplementary scholarship in honour of eminent Australian and JCSMR immunologist and virologist Professor Gordon Ada. The scholarship is to be awarded annually as funds permit. In the first instance the scholarship will be awarded in vaccine development.

RE-ENTRY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATE RESEARCH
The University offers each year a small number of Re-entry Scholarships for graduates who wish to resume academic studies after a break of at least three years since formal enrolment in a university program, the break normally being due to fulfilment of family obligations.

Stipend: A$22,500 (2010 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Other Benefits: Travel to Canberra from within Australia; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance

Maximum Duration: PhD or Professional Doctorate for 3 years in the first instance with a possible extension of up to 6 months on academic grounds; for a Master by research the tenure is 12 months, with the possibility of an extension of up to a further 12 months

Take Up Between: 1 January 2010 and 31 March 2010

Eligible Program(s): PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research, MPhil

Eligibility Criteria: Bachelors degree with at least upper second-class honours, or a Masters degree with a research component or equivalent; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia

PHD SCHOLARSHIPS IN THE ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF RURAL-URBAN MIGRATION IN CHINA AND INDONESIA

The Rural-Urban Migration in China and Indonesia project was established to investigate the impacts of internal migration within China and Indonesia. In particular the investigation is focussed on the collection of data through five year longitudinal surveys in China and Indonesia and the use of these data to answer questions regarding migrations impact on income mobility, poverty alleviation, the education, health and nutrition of children of migrant workers, and the assimilation of migrant workers into the city. The project is supported by funding from the Australian Research Council, AusAID, the Ford Foundation and several other sources at the Australian National University.
