Scholarships for Australian and New Zealand Citizens, Permanent Residents of Australia and International Students

ANU PHD SCHOLARSHIPS

A number of ANU PhD Scholarships which provide a stipend are funded by Colleges. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis. However, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship may be awarded for part-time study. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis.

Stipend: A$20,007.00 (2008 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Other Benefits: Travel to Canberra; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extension

Take Up By: 31 March. It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 March in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to the approval of the prospective supervisor, Head of Department and Dean/Director, a later start date may be possible. The date by which a scholarship must be taken up in a particular instance will be made clear in the formal letter of offer for the scholarship.

Eligible Program(s): PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research

Eligibility Criteria: Bachelors degree with at least upper second-class honours, or a Masters degree with a research component or equivalent; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students

Applications Close: Applications for international students are normally due by 31 August, and applications for Australian/New Zealand citizens and permanent residents of Australia are normally due by 31 October. However, Colleges may consider applications at any other time of the year.

However, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship may be awarded for part-time study. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis. It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 August in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to the approval of the prospective supervisor, Head of Department and Dean/Director, a later start date may be possible. JAMES RICE POSTGRADUATE AWARD

This scholarship is named in memory of the late James Rice, formerly of Alice Springs. It is intended to attract Australian or international students to pursue postgraduate research for a PhD degree at the JCSMR in a field broadly related to Multiple Sclerosis.

Field of Study: Medical Sciences
Stipend: A$19,616.00 (2007 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments
Other Benefits: N/A

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extension
Take Up By: 31 March 2008

PhD

Eligibility Criteria: Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students

NICTA SCHOLARSHIPS*

These scholarships are funded by the National ICT Australia (NICTA) centre of excellence for PhD study in a NICTA Research Program: Vision Science, Technology & Applications; Knowledge Representation & Reasoning; Logic and Computation; Statistical Machine Learning; Systems Engineering & Complex Systems; Wireless Signal Processing.

Fields of Study:Engineering and Information Sciences and Mathematical Sciences

Stipend: A$19,616 (2007 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments. Tuition fee scholarships are available for International students.
Other Benefits: N/A

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extensions

Take Up By: N/A
Eligibility Criteria:
Bachelor degree with first class honours, or equivalent and research proposal related to a NICTA research program; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students

Eligible Program(s): PhD Sciences and Mathematical Sciences

Applications Close: Students can apply any time, however they must also apply for any government or university scholarships for which they are eligible. The main university scholarship rounds close: 31 October (local students) and 31 August (International students)

RESEARCH SCHOOL OF ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS AREA SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIPS

The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics offers the following scholarships: a Supplementary Scholarship and the Alex Rodgers Travelling Scholarship.

 A Supplementary Scholarship is extended to all RSAA,(College of Science) PhD students

Field of Study: Astronomy and Astrophysics

ANU Location of Study: Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics

Stipend: A$5,000.00 (current rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments
Other Benefits: N/A

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extension

Take Up By: : N/A

Eligible Program(s): PhD

Eligibility Criteria: Bachelors degree with at least upper second-class honours, or a Masters degree with a research component or equivalent; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students

Applications Close: 31 October each year (no separate application required – ANU PhD/APA scholarship applicants are automatically considered)

How To Apply: As this scholarship is awarded to all RSAA PhD students, it is not necessary to complete a separate application form.

The Alex Rodgers Travelling Scholarship is offered to one or two RSAA graduate students to travel abroad with direct relevance to their thesis work (It will not be awarded to fund an overseas observing run). The award is based on scientific merit of the program, benefit of the program to RSAA and the student, and the effective use of the funds from the scholarship.

Field of Study: Astronomy and Astrophysics

Stipend: up to A$6,000.00, depending on available funds. The committee may decide to divide an award amongst a number of deserving candidates.

Maximum Duration: A one-off payment cleared against receipts to the value of the award.

Eligible Program(s): PhD

Eligibility Criteria: Full-time current RSAA PhD student. A successful applicant is ineligible to apply again. Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia

SCHOOL OF ART GRADUATE MATERIALS AWARDS

Several awards are available annually to assist all new and continuing students enrolled in a graduate program at the School of Art. These awards provide funding for materials and processes to enable students to pursue a proposed program of study.
