Supervising Research Students

A Workshop for New Supervisors

The University recognises the need to ensure that supervision provided for its research students is of the highest possible quality. However, effective supervision is a complex process and the ANU has its own particular policies and expectations. Hearing from the Dean of the Graduate Research School and experienced ANU supervisors, other staff and students, and sharing ideas can be helpful for reflection and clarification.

Although this workshop is intended primarily for less experienced supervisors and supervisors new to the University, it is open to anyone who is a member of a supervisory panel for PhD students, supervising Master by research students, or a potential supervisor.

The workshop includes:

• a presentation on University policy on supervision
• a discussion of the special role of supervisory panels at ANU
• an opportunity to clarify individual expectations of the supervisory role
• a presentation of supervisor and research student perspectives on supervision
• an exploration of the supervisory framework and process

Timetable

Research Supervision Workshops are held each semester, usually in April/May and October/November. Program details and registration forms are circulated to staff each semester.
