2017 Phone Appeal student callers

15 September 2017

The 40-strong membership of the student calling program at ANU reflects our diverse and vibrant student population. Our callers hail from around the globe and are truly representative of the full student lifecycle. Together they all share one unique quality - bringing the same energy, curiosity and enthusiasm they have in the classroom into their conversations with alumni.

Rocky, Bachelor of Law/Bachelor of Commerce

My favourite thing about ANU is…the diversity of the student population. It never ceases to amaze me just how many different paths people come from to study at the ANU, especially at my residence Fenner Hall.

When I’m not studying, I love to… play football (soccer), whether for ANUFC or representing Fenner Hall in the Interhall competition. I also love to DJ - you can find me playing at Mooseheads on most weekends, or otherwise at residential bar nights and society events throughout the year.

If I could change one thing in the world, I would… make people more empathetic. Everyone deserves to have their point of view understood.

Corrin, Bachelor of Law/Bachelor of International Relations

My favourite thing about ANU is... the strong sense of community we have here at ANU.

When I'm not studying, I love to... run, bake and travel.

When I'm not studying, I love to... spend time with my friends and make day trips to places around the ACT.

If I could change one thing in the world, I would... seek to end poverty.

Veronica, Master of Translation

My favourite thing about ANU is... some shelves in the libraries are mobile shelves. These shelves with their rotary handles make me cherish the books I retrieve from them even more. They are probably one of the reasons I like heading to the library and borrowing physical copies of books.

When I'm not studying, I love to... scour the web for interesting information. For example, did you know that butterflies taste with their feet?

If I could change one thing in the world, I would... ask the world to be more open-minded and understanding, to not be cooped up in their minds and truly see their surroundings, and understand that no one is born under the same circumstances and therefore while you may not be able to help it but measure others according to your own yardstick, you must not subject them to it.

Adam, Bachelor of Finance

My favourite thing about ANU is... definitely the people.

When I'm not studying, I love to... this happens a lot if I am honest. One of my favourite things to do is to go on an adventure to somewhere I haven't been before.

If I could change one thing in the world, I would... increase the number of hours in a day as I always seem to overestimate the amount of time I have left.

Ellie, Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Arts

My favourite thing about ANU is... the community and family that I have made while at Burton and Garran Hall.

When I'm not studying, I love to... play netball, hang out with my mates and see what weird food concoctions I can come up with in the B&G kitchens.

If I could change one thing in the world, I would... change the ingrained sense of racism and sexism within some cultures.

Sam, Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Finance

My favourite thing about ANU is... the location and layout of the campus. Having Black Mountain to the west, the city to the east, the lake to the south, and plenty of open space in between means there are no shortage of beautiful places to study or go for a run!

When I'm not studying, I love to... hang out with my mates, listen to music, cook, and play basketball.

If I could change one thing in the world, I would... ensure that rural, regional and remote students receive the same opportunities and resources as students from the major cities.

Daan, Master of Diplomacy

My favourite thing about ANU is... the people. I moved to Canberra just six months ago and I've already made friends for life, and with some very accomplished and inspirational people. My professors are engaged and know their fields. Of course, the beautiful Canberra weather really seals the deal.

When I'm not studying, I love to... organize social events for my cohort, bike, run, travel. Experiencing different cultures and being exposed to different ideas motivates me in what I do in- and outside of my studies.

If I could change one thing in the world, I would... crank up everyone's empathy dial a bit. That would probably go a long way in solving a lot of the world's problems

Kiki, Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Arts

My favourite thing about ANU is... the multicultural environment and the ability to really grow as a person by getting involved in things I am passionate about.
