Oil and Water: Being Han in Xinjiang

Presented by ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences

Oil and Water is an exploration of Hans settlers’ lives in Xinjiang, Chinese Central Asia, seen through the lens of anthropologist Tom Cliff from 2007-2010. Cliff’s empathetic photographs of Han settlers in Xinjiang show the human face of 21st century colonialism.

His portrayal of Xinjiang Han - from an enigma divorcee to an exploited tenant farmer - are among the defining works of modern Xinjiang as we see today.

This exhibition is supported by the College of Arts & Social Sciences at the Australian National University.
