Cyber security and global trends: The threat landscape to 2020

Technological development and deployment is increasing in pace as the tools and techniques become more widely accessible. Along with the potential to increase quality of life, these capabilities can also threaten personal and national security when utilised by criminal groups, terrorists and authoritarian states. Activities from the mundane, such as household finances, to the globally significant, such as national democratic processes, are vulnerable to hostile cyber actors.

How will this threat landscape evolve in the near term for individuals, organisations and states? What are the current trends across the cyber threat landscape and what options are available for increasing resilience in the cyber realm? In this public seminar, Dr Greg Treverton, former Chairman of the U.S. National Intelligence Council and lead editor of the highly respected Global Trends report, will map the current threat landscape and discuss how it will likely evolve out to 2020.

Dr Gregory F. Treverton served in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence as the National Intelligence Council chairman from September 2014 to October 2016. He previously held several leadership positions at RAND, including Director of the RAND Center for Global Risk and Security, Director of the International Security and Defense Policy Center, and Associate Dean of the Pardee RAND Graduate School. Dr Treverton's work at RAND has examined terrorism, intelligence and law enforcement, as well as new forms of public-private partnership.

He has served in government for the first Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, handling Europe for the National Security Council and later, as Vice Chair of the National Intelligence Council (1993-1995), overseeing the writing of America's National Intelligence Estimates. Dr Treverton holds an A.B. summa cum laude from Princeton University and an M.P.P. and Ph.D. in economics and politics from Harvard University

Dr Treverton is visiting Australia as a guest of Macquarie Telecom, a proud partner in this event.
