Bid'ah Cinta is the third in Nurman Hakim’s trilogy of films concerning Islam in contemporary Indonesia. The first of the trilogy, Pesantren: 3 Wishes 3 Loves (3 Doa 3 CInta), concerned three friends arrested after 9/11 on suspicion of terrorism, was shown on SBS Australia shortly after its 2008 release. The second, Khalifah, examined the controversies surrounding the niqab in 2011.

It was shown on SBS during the 2017 controversy surrounding the election of the governor of Jakarta. This love story was boycotted by Islamic puritans but embraced by liberal Islamic groups.

The screening will be introduced by Associate Professor Greg Fealy from Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, with short explanation of sectarian Islam in contemporary Indonesia.

This film is part of Asia and the Pacific Screens Season Seven: Polyphonic Asia, presented by the Australian Centre on China in the World.
