Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Doctoral StudyPhD students from each of the University's seven colleges have received funding towards their research with the Vice-Chancellor'... 13 October 2008 Awarded for the first time in 2008, the scholarships are allocated to the top ranked domestic PhD candidates in each college. The students receive a stipend of $25,000 per annum and support funding of $15,000 per annum to be used for travel, particularly to IARU partners, and other research support. At a morning tea to meet the 2008 scholars, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb spoke of the University's achievements in PhD research, noting that the percentage of graduate students at ANU has increased from 20 per cent to 45 per cent in less than a decade. "Part of being a student is the importance of being with other students in the same situation," Professor Chubb said. "It's nice to know that you're in the mix, rather than on your own, grappling with the worries and difficulties of thesis writing." VC's Scholar John Altin is in the first year of his PhD at the John Curtin School of Medical Research looking at the immune system and allergic diseases. He is hoping to use his scholarship funding to gain some experience in another laboratory overseas. Fellow Scholar Nicholas Cheesman from the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific said there are some good supporting courses that help prepare students for the PhD experience. "I attended a number of courses in the first few months before I really settled in," he said. "I really recommend it to new PhD students."
