Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship

May 10 this year marked the fourth anniversary of the untimely passing of Dr Minoru Hokari. His sister, Yuki Hokari, reflects on her memories of her brother, and the future of the Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship.

"It is May 10 again and has been four years since the day we can never forget. Is your memory of Mino still vivid?" asks Yuki Hokari, the devoted sister of Minoru Hokari, in her recent email to his colleages at the Australian National University.

Described as a path-breaking scholar and inspiring colleague, Dr Minoru Hokari (1971-2004) made outstanding contributions towards developing a respectful collaborative research strategy with Indigenous Australians.

His colleagues and friends in the Australian Centre for Indigenous History in the Research School of Social Sciences at ANU established the Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship following his untimely death in 2004, to assist postgraduate students to conduct fieldwork or related research in Australian Indigenous history.

This fund is currently halfway to the final target of $125 000, thanks to the generosity of a number of regular donors, including one individual who makes a contribution to the fund every six months. However, there is still a long way to go. "We are now at the stage for asking for support not only from Mino's friends but also those who love Australia and/or Aboriginal culture."

Minoru's legacy also endures with 4000 copies of his Japanese book 'Radical Oral History' having been published to date, and an English translation is set to be published in the near future.
