Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is an endowment?

An endowment is a group of funds which is invested for the long term. The interest generated from the funds is used in part to support the cause the endowment is in aid of, and in part reinvested to ensure the funds retain their market value.

The ANU Endowment for Excellence is a substantial body of funds which provides an independent and lasting income stream to complement traditional sources to support scholarships and research at ANU. Funds are invested in the University’s Long Term Investment Pool and a percentage of interest earned annually (5% in 2009) is used to support scholarships, prizes, and research projects. The remainder of the interest is reinvested to ensure capital growth.
