I am a third-year Painting Student
at the School of Art
The photo shows part of the painting workshop
where I study, on a late spring afternoon. The school is situated
in a beautiful Art Deco building and I very much appreciate working
in such elegant surroundings. I often take photos from this vantage
point, contrasting reflections of sky and sun on the windows with
the white of the building's facade and (increasingly rarely, it
seems) clouds. I intended the photo to be a record of a momentary
effect of the light, with a view to later making a painting of
it, but I never have painted it. Instead, I keep taking photos
of this constantly repeated moment, each time different, somehow
seduced each time by the mood that is created by the qualities
of light, colour and composition that prevail.
