About the Dean of Students


The Dean of Students is here to advise and assist students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, when problems or grievances arise in their academic or personal life at ANU.

The Dean can help you to resolve issues, and can also direct you to other on-campus advice and support services.

Professor Penny Oakes B.Sc., Ph.D. Bristol

Professor Penny Oakes has worked at ANU since 1991, initially as a researcher and lecturer in Psychology in the Faculty of Science. She has served as the Head of the School of Psychology and as an Associate Dean (Distinguished Students) in the Science Faculty, and as Pro Vice-Chancellor (University Community).

Her research interests are in the areas of social and political psychology; particularly identity, group and intergroup behaviour, stereotyping, political behaviour and public opinion. She is co-author and co-editor of several books on stereotyping and group life.

Professor Oakes graduated with first class honours from the University of Bristol, where she went on to complete her doctorate in social psychology. Prior to joining ANU, Professor Oakes taught and conducted research at Macquarie University, and has taken visiting positions at Exeter University (UK), the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), and the University of Munster (Germany).
