Abolishing all Nuclear Weapons

Mr Fraser addressed the current state of nuclear weapons acquisition and distribution and the present danger and opportunities facing the world. He covered the failures in disarmament and non-proliferation and the implications and security challenges nuclear weapons have for Australian Defence policy. Mr Fraser will also discuss the current Rudd Government's initiative of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferations and Disarmament, and what Australia can do to help abolish nuclear weapons.

This was the 2009  Dr John Gee Memorial Lecture presented by the ANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre and Lowy institute for International Policy.

Rt Hon Malcolm Fraser

On 21 March 1975, Mr Fraser became the Leader of the Opposition and on 11 November 1975, following the dismissal of the Labor Prime Minister, Mr Fraser was appointed Prime Minister of a Caretaker Government pending the outcome of a General Election. Mr Fraser's Government was subsequently re-elected in the two succeeding elections, in 1977 and 1980. On 25 February 1983 Mr Fraser became Australia's second longest serving Prime Minister. Mr Fraser resigned from the Parliament in April 1983 after nearly 28 years as the Member for Wannon.

Mr Fraser was Chairman of CARE Australia from 1987 to December 2001. He was President of CARE International from 1990-1995, and was Vice President from 1995 - 1999. The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission awarded Mr Fraser the 2000 Australian Human Rights Medal. In 2002 Mr Fraser published his book Common Ground - Issues that should bind and not divide us.
