Casework Styles and Challenges in Disability Support in Tertiary Education:
Reflecting on our own stories

Presenters:
Trevor Allan, Disability Liaison Officer, ANU
Ken Lofts, Teacher Consultant (Vision impairment), TAFE NSW Western Institute, Bathurst
Geoff Maddox, Disability Adviser, UWS

As we all know, the documented type and severity of a student's disability is often a poor indicator of his/her support needs in tertiary education.

Conditions such as anxiety, depression or learning disability are often present alongside another disability, but are undisclosed, undiagnosed or undocumented, and may involve more support than the presenting disability. The pressures of starting off in a new environment often increase these support needs. Students also differ widely in how much support they expect.

Our strategies include:

  • Referral to counsellors or mental health services within or outside the institution;
  • Use of mentoring programs and provision of individual educational supports;
  • Co-operative work with Learning Skills staff in the institution;
  • Intensive co-operation with academic and administrative staff;
  • And last but not least, intensive work with the student by the disability adviser/consultant or TC.

What are reasonable expectations about how much support the institution should provide?

How far should "disability support" or "individual responsibility" extend? Do the institution’s policies on this agree with our own ethical and professional views?

Does it matter if the educational adjustments provided appear "inconsistent" between students, in terms of their documented disabilities?

Do the institution's policies and practices impact disproportionately on students with disabilities, in areas such as academic and non-academic misconduct and student administration?
