Sound Art
What is Sound Art?
Over the course of the past two decades, on the frontier between the visual arts and music, an art form has evolved in which sound has become material within the context of an expanded concept of sculpture. This course explores the possibilities of Sound Art in relation to wider media art practices including sound to image, sound in time and space and cooperatively with physical objects (Installation). The course considers what creative outcomes are possible in the domain of Sound Art through the examination of works from contemporary Australian and International artists. In order to facilitate a practical engagement with sound, the course examines available software applications for processing, controlling and manipulating sound for the diverse media contexts.
What is Physical Computing for the Arts?
The rapidly emerging field of Physical Computing concerns the use of electronics and micro-controllers to bring together the physical and digital worlds. This complimentary study is an introduction to basic electronics, control and communication systems, sensors and micro-controller technology and programming. Various national and international projects will be discussed in order to understand what is possible and how such technology integrates with the creative future. As a project based course the principle objective is to encourage creative engagement between materials of the physical world and digital technology in the pursuit of a creative outcome.
