Digital media major, Bachelor of Visual Arts
The Bachelor of Visual Arts Digital Media Major develops student's creative practice through studies in digital media focused on animation, interactivity, computer music and digital video. It teaches digital media in the context of the visual arts, and is designed for students who wish to develop careers in the arts industry or in film and television, visual effects and digital animation, digital sound production, and multimedia and online design.

Applications
Applications for the Bachelor of Visual Arts are welcome from both Australian and international applicants. Australian applicants must apply through the University Admissions Centre (UAC). HYPERLINK "www.uac.edu.au. In addition to this, you must also register for an Admission Interview by contacting the Faculty of Arts Admission Officer (02) 6125 2898. Interviews will be held in the second half of November each year, at which applicants must present a portfolio of their work. Guidelines for the portfolio are listed below. Successful applicants will be notified by the School of Art.

Interview & Portfolio Information
We are looking for imaginative, intelligent and creative students, interested in the creative arts. Applicants do not necessarily need high-level technical skills, but should be able to demonstrate their creative strengths, knowledge and ability to study in digital media. The guidelines for presentation of a portfolio are flexible. Works do not need to be constrained to a digital format, and may consist of any or several of the following:
Authored DVDs, Quicktime compatible files, audio CDs, online porfolios, visual work including drawings, visual diaries, performance documentation and so on, as well as evidence of written work.
Photomedia Major, Bachelor of Visual Arts
The department also offers a Photomedia Major in the Bachelor of Visual Arts. The Photomedia Major focuses on the still image and teaches fundamental techniques such as digital and analogue photography; studio lighting; computer manipulation; and other experimental techniques. It also teaches aspects of video production and public and community art. Students have access to well equipped colour and black and white darkrooms, a professional lighting studio, a student gallery for exhibitions of art works, generous student work spaces, and specialist research facilities such as an inkjet research facility for wide format printing on a variety of materials. Graduates go on to be practicing visual artists and photographers, to undertake further study and higher degree research; to work in galleries and museums; to train as teachers or lecturers; to set up their own businesses; or to work in the printing, design and publishing businesses.

Graduate Programs
Master of Visual Effects (MVFX)
The Master of Visual Effects is aimed at professionals and graduates wishing to advance their creative media experience in the visual effects arena. The MVFX is a one year program designed for people developing their professional experience in the broadcast and production industries, creative design arts and media research.
Admission Requirements
Applicants are expected to have completed an appropriate three year undergraduate qualification at a high level of achievement, to have demonstrated significant achievement in their area of expertise. They should be able to demonstrate intellectual creativity through evidence of a practice portfolio or showreel, and documentation of written analytical skills. In exceptional circumstances professional experience and standing in the field may be taken as equivalent qualification for admission to the course. There is no provision for advanced standing.

This program of concentrated study provides a one-year program, by coursework and individual practice in Computer Music or Interactive Digital Media. The use of new digital sound and/or image technologies for artistic, commercial or scientific perceptualisation purposes over two semesters full-time (or equivalent part-time). Whilst developing technical facility, the underlying principle of the program is the development of aesthetic sensibilities in the artistic use of computers.
Students will also study the core courses of Formal Structures for New Media, and New Media, Innovation & Research.

Master of Philosophy by Research two to four years fulltime (or equivalent part time)
The aim of this program is to provide an opportunity for candidates to undertake research and development on some aspect of new media arts at a postgraduate level. The program is designed for highly motivated individuals who wish to further develop further their creative and technical expertise in computer music and related digital audio signal processing, computer animation, digital video and other electronic imaging, interactive multimedia or some mixed media combination of these fields for artistic, technical or scientific perceptualisation purposes.
Doctor of Philosophy
PhD applicants are required to carry out independent research which must make a substantial intellectual contribution and which demonstrates a capacity to relate the research to the broader framework of the discipline. The outcomes of the research may be presented in the form of a written thesis or its equivalent, of a scope and size that could normally be expected to be completed in three years of fulltime study. It may include artistic work relevant to the field of study, as well as a written dissertation, and may incorporate video, compositions, documented live presentations and sound recordings, multimedia or other forms of visual or sonic art as appropriate to the research. This will be evaluated at the standard internationally recognised for the PhD degree in the relevant discipline(s). The Graduate School also encourages and facilitates cross-disciplinary research through student membership of more than one program. All students have a panel of three supervisors/advisers.
Prerequisites:
Applicants seeking admission to the PhD must hold at least a degree of Bachelor with first or upper second class Honours of an Australian university in an appropriate discipline related to the proposed course of study; or such other qualification as the Prescribed Authority determines, being a qualification that is equivalent or superior to such a degree.
Postgraduate Research Admission Requirements:
Application is made on the Postgraduate Research Course and/or Scholarship Application and must be accompanied by evidence of meeting the admission requirements. An admission panel will assess the application.
