Computer Animation

The Computer Animation curriculum is designed to equip students with the requisite skills to graduate into a world of professional animation, artistic practice or higher research. Past graduates specialising in animation have gone into the television and broadcast industries, film and visual effects production, visualisation design, individual and collaborative art projects, teaching and further education. The animation program provides students with a broad skills base as well as the opportunity to focus on a specialised area of animation. Through exploration of various animation techniques and strategies students build up a vocabulary which they can draw on to find an appropriate means of expression for their ideas.

The first semester sees an exploration of traditional analogue animation techniques such as stop-frame and silhouette animation and introduces 3D computer animation using Maya, the industry standard computer animation package. Subsequent semesters delve deeper into Maya with a focus on technical and conceptual innovation in production. By the end of the program students have a strong artistic identity of their own as well as the technical and creative proficiency to realise an idea from beginning to end.
