Pamela Lofts is
a visual artist living in Alice Springs in central Australia
where she moved after attaining her BA (Visual Arts),
Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney in 1989.
In 1995 she won the Alice Prize and in 2001 was awarded
an Australia Council grant for a residency in Europe.
Lofts is represented in state and regional gallery collections
including the National Gallery of Australia. Currently
she is a candidate for a Master of Philosophy at the Australian
National University School of Art, Canberra.
In 1994 Lofts established Watch This Space Artist Run
Initiative in Alice Springs. She was the Coordinator until
1998 and Curatorial Director from 1999 to 2001. From 1980
to 1986 Lofts collaborated with Aboriginal custodians
to research, design and produce animated films and a series
of children's books for early literacy. From 1992 to 1997
she co-produced 'Yarrtji-Six Women's Stories from the
Great Sandy Desert', a major publication of Aboriginal
women's oral histories. In 2004 she was engaged as a consultant
by the Central Land Council to curate and design a touring
photographic exhibition commemorating 30 years of the
CLC. Lofts also works as a children's book illustrator
and has illustrated a number of books, the most recent
being 'Hunwick's Egg' written by Mem Fox, 2005.
Pamela Lofts' art practice is informed by personal experience
and addresses cultural, political, historical and environmental
issues. She primarily works with sculptural installation
and photography. |
