PHAPTAWAN SUWANNAKUDT has worked extensively in the production of murals and in contemporary exhibitions of Thai traditional painting. She began her painting career as an apprentice to her father the renowned Thai traditional mural painter, Paiboon Suwannakudt before becoming a leader and instructor in mural painting herself.

Phaptawan's work conveys stories of Buddhism, mythology and Thai traditions and since moving to Australia in 1996 she has employed her skills in the development and communication of new narratives. Her most recent works are innovative visions of the Australian landscape expressed through a distinctively Thai sensibility towards colour, symbolism and form. These speak of a more personal narrative of experience and an exploration the Australian lanscapes of perspectives on her life as a traditionally trained Thai painter living in Australia.

Phaptawan's work in <abstractions> was curated by Christine Clarke.
