Training and Education

A number of intellectual property and commercialisation courses are run for both staff and students during the year. These are held both on-campus and off campus through Knowledge Commercialisation Australasia and ATP Innovations.

The Office of Commercialisation hosts InnovationACT, a staged business development and commercialisation program for ANU staff and students. The program has recently reached the conclusion of its second year. More information on the program, which will be run again in 2010, is available at the InnovationACT website.

Engaging Research

The Office of Commercialisation, with the support of ATP Innovations and KCA, presents a workshop for research staff and students looking to develop their knowledge and skills of the commercialisation process.

The workshop covers the goals and processes of commercialisation in the context of indentifying and developing key intellectual property, and building long-term relationships with industry partners. The workshop should be ideal for any research staff or students who are becoming involved in commercialisation, who believe that their research may have commercial outcomes, or who are looking to work towards more strategic partnerships with industry.

Tuesday, 18th November 2008, 9am-5pm
McDonald Room, Menzies Library

Opportunity Assessment: Where Does the Value Lie?

In a University environment, generating an income stream from Intellectual Property is a background concern to ensuring IP is managed in a responsible way. As such, the Office of Commercialisation evaluates research outputs to ensure only that high quality IP with commercialisation potential is patented or otherwise protected.
This seminar will address the key decision points the Office of Commercialisation makes in deciding whether the best use of ANU IP is through commercialisation.

Protect or Perish?

The fundamental decision point in commercialisation is whether to hold off publishing your research so you can protect it first. This is often the most difficult decision to take, as at the point of invention your picture of what your discovery means, who might be interested, and what is already out there will not always be clear.
This seminar draws from specific examples in providing tips on how to identify if your research is patentable, and what you should consider in following the protection now and the publishing later path.
