New VenturesA number of diverse companies have been created based on academic research generated and owned by the ANU. The creation of these companies benefits the local economy and generates many new jobs. The OC continually seeks seed and early stage investment for its new business opportunities as well as experienced business professionals to assist in start-up and growth. Seeing Machines Pty LtdSeeing Machines is an award winning technology company focused on vision based human machine interfaces. Intellectual property developed by ANU researchers from the Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering and the Research School of Biological Sciences The company has received a number of awards and Government grants, including a $3.4 million Commonwealth R&D Start Grant and a $250,000 AusIndustry Commercial Ready Grant for the development of a glaucoma diagnostic medical device in a joint venture with the ANU. Seeing Machines is listed on the LSX AIM market. Vaxine Pty LtdVaxine is a Canberra- and Adelaide-based biopharmaceutical company developing a portfolio of vaccines, both therapeutic and prophylactic, to treat serious infectious diseases. Vaxine has recently been granted more than AUD$3 million by the US National Institute of Health to develop vaccines to protect against bio-terrorist attacks. WRiota Pty LtdWRiota was established in 2004 to commercialize IP related to an innovative silicon-based high-density memory device. WRiota was the industrial partner of the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, ANU, in a successful ARC Linkage application in late 2004. Iliad Chemicals Pty LtdIliad Chemicals is a Melbourne-based drug discovery company which uses novel synthetic chemistry to discover and optimise new drugs. These drugs are used for treating ailments such as multiple sclerosis and target blood vessels in tumours. The company’s MultiCore® technology gives direct access to classes of drug-like compounds that have proven difficult to access using traditional methods. Iliad Chemicals was acquired by Bionomics Limited in 2005 for AUD$12 million. ASI Pty LtdASI specialises in the development and manufacture of small to large scale scientific instruments. Its range of products are marketed globally and include: SHRIMP II, SHRIMP RG, UMIS, GFRT and HPT. Since the company was formed, it has won a number of export as well as engineering excellence awards. Biotron LimitedBiotron is a biotechnology company focused on the development of novel antiviral therapeutics and high-throughput screening technologies for cancer diagnosis. The Company also has a number of early stage projects targeting other indications such as cardiovascular disease. Biotron is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Crop DesignCropDesign is an agricultural biotech company delivering agronomic traits for the global commercial seed markets. The company’s trait discovery and development program, powered by the TraitMill™ platform, focuses on enhancing grain yield in corn and rice. The company, founded in 1998, was acquired by BASF Plant Science in 2006. http://www.cropdesign.com/general.php Pestat Pty LtdPestat Pty Ltd is the commercialisation arm of the Pest Animal Control Co-operative Research Centre. Pestat Pty Ltd produces purified proteins for use in experiments and trials by its research partners and associates in the Pest Animal Control CRC. They specialise in production of mammalian proteins in mammalian cell culture systems. Their offices and laboratories are located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Pharmaxis LtdPharmaxis is a specialist pharmaceutical company focusing on human therapeutic products that address chronic respiratory and autoimmune diseases and the development of improved lung function tests. The company is listed on S&P/ASX 300 and completed an AUD$87 million capital raising in 2005. Phenomix Pty LtdPhenomix is a drug discovery and development company targeting therapeutic programs in immune disease and metabolic syndrome. The Company has integrated phenotyping assays and disease models into all stages of the drug discovery and development process. Phenomix is now based in San Diego, California. Virax Ltd is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
