Studying for a PhD, Michelle is researching consumer priorities for depression and bipolar research. Michelle also works on a variety of projects including examining the quality of depression websites, side effects of antidepressants and interventions for improving sleep.

Barbara Boyer

Barbara is undertaking a PhD in Clinical Psychology. Her research project will examine the associations between spousal bereavement in the elderly and cognitive change. She is analysing data from the PATH through life project as well as undertaking a community based Clinical study.

Daniel Costin

Daniel is undertaking a professional doctorate in clinical psychology at the ANU School of Psychology and conducts the research component of his degree at CMHR. His thesis topic is: "The effect of e-mail based depression information interventions on help seeking behaviour, mental health literacy and helping behaviour in young adults with depression: randomised controlled trial".

Louise Farrer

Lou is a Clinical PhD student working on a collaborative project between CMHR and Lifeline Australia. She is examining the effectiveness of web-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and psychoeducation in lowering depression in Lifeline callers, when supported by telephone counsellors. She will also investigate factors that predict adherence to Internet-based interventions.

Gautam

Prapti's honors thesis covered the guidance of migrating neurons in pre-term brain injury. Her PhD research is on the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, looking at the relationship between dementia and ageing using data from the PATH Through Life project.

Amanda George

Amanda's PhD uses date from the PATH Through Life Project to examine the characteristics associated with use of the drug "ecstasy". She is exploring the relationship between ecstasy use and mental health and cognition.

Sarah Gill

Sarah began a PhD in Clinical Psychology at the Family and Community Health Research Unit at CMHR in 2005. Her research project will investigate the relationship between workforce participation and retirement and mental health among middle-age to older adults in a nation-wide survey, and the PATH Through Life study.

Christopher Hatherly

Chris started his PhD with the Centre in 2007. He is looking at cognitive and visual factors as predictors of driving ability in older adults. His research forms part of a project on older driver safety supported by the ARC and the NRMA ACT Road Safety Trust.

Affrica Jenkins

Affrica is a PhD student working on the Beyond Ageing Project, a community-based depression prevention trial for older people. She is investigating the effectiveness of a print-plus-telephone physical activity intervention for encouraging physical activity and preventing depression in older adults at risk of depression.

Liana Leach

Liana is a PhD student investigating the impact of relationship and family life transitions on depression. She is using data from the PATH through life project to examine these transitions and their contribution to the preponderance of depression in women.

Karen Mather

Karen began her PhD in 2003 and is investigating genetic risk factors associated with cognitive deficits in an aging population. She is also interested in gene-gene, gene-environment interactions and the genetic epidemiology of mental health disorders.

Alison Neil

Alison is a PhD student coordinating the YouthMood project. The YouthMood project is investigating whether MoodGYM, an interactive web program, is effective in lowering depression, improving self-esteem, and lowering stigmatising attitudes to depression amongst adolescents.

Kerry Sargent-Cox

Kerry is a PhD student investigating psychosocial aspects of ageing and mortality. She is particularly interested in longitudinal change in self-rated health and its predictive quality of major health events and mortality in the elderly.
