7 Aug Lecture: Climate Change and Biodiversity
August 6th
2009
Climate change threatens the world’s major centres of biodiversity, placing society’s collective conservation and development efforts and investments to date in jeopardy. Observed changes indicate we are already in an adaptation deficit. Dr Price will explain how the Wallace Initiative and the Ecosystems and Livelihoods Adaptation Network (ELAN) will help address this issue.
The Wallace Initiative seeks to map areas where species are, and where models project they will still be in 50 years time, for a range of climate change scenarios. It will project future ranges and potential climatically suitable migratory pathways for wild terrestrial species, wild crop types and marine fisheries. The Initiative will also look at how protected area systems must change to deal with these issues.
ELAN is a research-driven, action-oriented International effort committed to delivering innovative and practical solutions to adaptation and risk reduction based on the latest information and the diffusion of knowledge among adaptation practitioners and policy-makers.
About the presenter
Dr Jeff Price has worked on climate change and biodiversity for more than a decade. He co-authored the Nature article ‘Fingerprints of global warming on wild animals and plants’ as well as scientific papers on the potential impacts of global warming on birds.
He was a lead author on the IPCC Third and Fourth Assessment Reports (ecosystems) and Technical Paper on Climate Change and Biodiversity and contributed to reports underpinning the UK Government’s Stern Review of the Economics of Climate Change and the US National Assessment on Climate Change Impacts on the United States.
