Dr Andrew Glikson

Earth and paleoclimate scientist. School of Archaeology and Anthropology, Research School of Earth Science, Planetary Science Institute.

Professional background

(B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.) former Principal Research Scientist, Australian geological Survey Organization

Andrew Glikson graduated at the University of Western Australia in 1968, following studies of early volcanics and sediments in the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie region. He joined the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1968, where until 1996 he documented and researched geological terrains in central Australia, Western Australia and Queensland, with focus on crustal evolution, the origin of the continents and correlations with early terrains in South Africa, India and Canada. He joined the Australian National University in 1998, studying the effects of large asteroids and comets on the evolution of the Earth and the atmosphere, with reference to the mass extinction of species. He proceeded to study the relationships between climate and human evolution and, conversely, the current effects of humans on the atmosphere. He has an asteroid and an impact crater named after him by Eugene Shoemaker, former chief scientist, Astrobiology Branch, US Geological Survey.

Research and teaching interests

Andrew Glikson has been communicating with Earth, climate and biology scientists regarding the nature of early Earth climates, abrupt climate changes and the origins of mass extinction of species, including current relationships between humans and the atmosphere. He published numerous articles and gave seminars and public lectures with the aim of communicating the evidence to other scientists and the public, including convening of conferences and meetings with government environment committees.
