Welcome to HERITAGE Early Childhood Centre
HERITAGE Early Childhood Centre is a small, community-based, not-for-profit service, providing high quality early education and care for 57 children (6 weeks to 6 years) of families of The Australian National University (ANU) and wider community. We take great pride in providing a welcoming, family atmosphere where families and educators work together in the best interests of the children.
Heritage recognises that teaching and learning have taken place on its’ land for thousands of years and is honoured to continue this tradition. We acknowledge the Ngunnawal people as the original owners of the land.
We are licensed under the Children and Young People Act, 2008. The license is subject to achieving the National Quality Standard which is assessed by the Children’s Policy and Regulation Unit.
HERITAGE is located in Canberra at 75 Lennox Crossing, Acton, at the southern end of the Australian National University. We are in a quiet, leafy part of the campus, just a short walk from the shores of Lake Burley Griffin (close to Acton Peninsula). We have a large landscaped garden with shaded areas, large sandpit, winding paths for bikes and a wide variety of safe play equipment. A well shaded sandpit and play area is also available at the rear of the baby room for use whenever babies need some quiet play time.

The service is open from 7.45am to 5.45pm, Monday to Friday throughout the year, except for public holidays, educator training days and a two week period over Christmas/New Year.
Rooms and Educator Ratios
Heritage is staffed by a team of experienced, dedicated and qualified educators. A low turnover of educators ensures a stable, caring environment for your child.
15 babies (6 weeks to 18 months*) are cared for in the Nursery by a minimum of 4 educators (1:4)
20 toddlers (18-36 months*) are cared for in the Toddler Room by a minimum of 5 educators (1:4)
22 preschoolers (36 months to 6 years) are cared in the Preschool Room for by a minimum of 2 educators (1:11)
*Children may stay in the Nursery or Toddler Room beyond the upper age limit if deemed necessary for developmental reasons or until a place becomes available in the next age group.
A warm and stimulating environment is created by our educators who take a holistic and inclusive approach to fostering each child’s development based on individual observations. Our Room Leaders use the Early Years Learning Framework of Australia to guide their curriculum planning which encourages them to stimulate and engage each child by allowing them the freedom to make choices according to their strengths and interests, while also encouraging them to investigate new ones. Structured library, music, yoga and fitness sessions are available for older children.
Heritage is proud of its’ Preschool Program, which is led by a dedicated Preschool Teacher. As children move into the Preschool Room, it is appropriate to include more structured activities in their day and to begin to develop early academic skills such as reading, writing and maths. However, the focus is still very much on learning through play and following children’s strengths and interests in order to keep them involved, motivated and active in their learning journey. Planned excursions include Floriade and the Bus Wash Depot.
At Heritage, we endeavour to write policies and procedures which genuinely support our educators and families to provide the best possible care for enrolled children during the crucial early years of their development. In addition, we have a duty to provide a safe environment for all enrolled children and similarly families are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the Heritage policies, procedures and guidelines. Families are provided with a Heritage Handbook and Policy Handbook on enrolment.
