11 PROGRAMS Settling children into the centre To assist in a smooth transition from home to care at AECC every effort is made to consult with parents. A build-up of time is encouraged allowing all members of the family to become familiar with the daily routine, the staff members and the other children. By reading this Handbook prior to starting, families can learn much about the centre's operation. Further information is available from the Director and staff in each room. Daily routines/programs These are on display in each section. Flexibility is written into the routines to allow for changes of season, the weather, excursions etc. Please ask staff for further information. Individualised programme planning Senior staff in each group are responsible for planning an early childhood program which reflects child centred, anti-bias and multicultural experiences and is developmentally appropriate for the children in the group. Staff observe each individual child on a regular basis recording these observations and using them to develop individual objectives for each child. These are then incorporated into the overall group programme of activities and learning experiences. A wide variety of early childhood curriculum and developmental areas are provided for within the indoor and outdoor play environments including cognitive, physical (gross and fine motor), social and emotional development, language & literature, art & craft, music, science, maths & number, drama, movement and dance, construction etc. A specialist Kodaly music teacher also visits the centre on a weekly basis during school terms and a small fee is charged for this. (More information on the Kodaly system is available from the office). Parents are welcome to discuss their child's development and view their developmental records at any time by making an appointment with the Senior who plans for their child. Guidance and discipline Staff follow a socialisation policy which is consistent throughout the centre. It ensures safety to all within the centre and respect for property. Guidance is given to develop self-discipline and appropriate social skills and positive reinforcement is given for appropriate behaviour. For further information refer to the Policy Handbook. Excursions Centre Policy states that there is to be a minimum of two staff when children go for local walks on campus and child:staff ratios must be adhered to. Parents sign blanket permission for local walks on registration. Staff will advise you via the room notice board if they have been on a walk. Parents are informed of external excursions at least one week prior to the event and permission forms must be completed and returned to staff. The child:staff ratios required by the licensing conditions are always adhered to. Parents are welcome to join on excursions. Enquiries can be directed to the staff organising the excursion. Travel is by mini-bus only and where possible buses will be fitted with seat belts.
