Course outline

Lessons shall cover the following as needed:

  • discussion of sourcing and using oil painting materials
  • mixing colours to achieve different tonal values
  • observational drawing techniques using still-life objects
  • applying paint: palette knife techniques, tonal value in painting, painting wet into wet
  • chiaroscuro method (bringing light into dark)
  • how to work in series working on more than one painting at a time
  • identifying areas of interest, images and subjects for conceptual development
  • identifying key elements and painting approach for concept and project development
  • begin concept development project.
  • observational drawing techniques using still life objects.
  • advanced sketching with oils, alla prima, painting wet into wet
  • chiaroscuro method concept and project development
  • finalisation and presentation of concept and project to group

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students should:

  • have an ability to apply paint using different techniques to achieve desired visuals, using oil paint, from Alla Prima (sketching with oil paint ), glazing techniques Palette knife techniques and different methods of under-painting
  • development your personal palette will be addressed to help you use your colour preferences to the fullest
  • have some basic drawing skills
  • have a knowledge of oil painting methods, techniques and materials
  • have a knowledge of past and present artist
  • have an understanding of the variety of approaches to painting method, concept, and materials
  • have a cohesive body of work with technical and conceptual improvements in the student use of oil paint

Who should enrol

This course is open to anyone interested to explore, or develop a knowledge and practice of oil painting.


  • 500ml Odourless solvent
  • Liquin or liquol medium
  • Art Spectrum medium 1, and 3 (or similar)
  • Disposable gloves
  • Hand protection cream
  • Spare mixing cups/ plastic disposable or similar
  • Cotton rags
  • A cool yellow (lemon yellow)
  • A warm yellow (aurelian or Indian Yellow)
  • A cool Red (alizarin crimson)
  • A warm red (Cadmium red)
  • A cool blue (Phthalo and Cereleum are good to have)
  • A warm blue (ultra marine)
  • A black such as Ivory Black
  • Titanium White
  • Phone camera to record
  • Writing pad
  • A white palette or disposable palettes
  • Palette knives
  • 3 small 30cm x 30cm panels/canvases/primed paper per class
  • A range of hog hair bristle brushes from fine (3mm) to large (25mm)
  • A couple of fine oil brushes (sable imitations, nylon)


Malcolm Utley is a qualified educator currently teaching part time at colleges and high schools in Canberra. He has a diverse creative background having worked as an architect, film maker and most recently a full time artist exhibiting paintings and sculpture in Australia and South East Asia.
