An intensive studio workshop where participants will be introduced to the four major areas of art practice: drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. This course is designed to cater to the interests and needs of the participants while providing a general curriculum to introduce art as a form of self-expression. Demonstrations of techniques in each media included. No prior experience necessary but an interest in art is essential.

Contemporary techniques with acrylic painting

An innovative course with acrylic painting techniques demonstrating the great versatility of the medium. Demonstrating ways of rendering in painting in contemporary art, to extend skills and consider new ways with abstraction, symbolism and experimental approaches to bring out a unique and personal visual language. Creative drawing

Drawing and the meaning of life

This is a practical, skill-based drawing course which also explores the extent to which the act of drawing influences — and is influenced by — a world view. For beginners or more experienced artists seeking to re-invigorate their practice with a fresh perspective. Folio Preparation

The Portfolio Preparation classes are designed to assist students in developing their own working processes centered on visual creativity and the preparation of a portfolio for submission to art school or a similar course of study.
The course supports the principle requirements for a balanced art portfolio. Lessons are structured to empower the student to find their own voice in a wide variety of disciples including drawing from observation, life drawing and image processing (print making and painting). Introduction to oil painting

This is an introductory class that covers a range of different themes including landscape, still life and figurative painting. Students will be shown different techniques and ideas, including colour theory, and also introduced to the formative ideas that have been responsible for the development of painting in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Mosaics for everyone

Mosaics is something that anyone with any level of skill can do. The aim of this class is to provide the skills necessary to design and apply mosaics onto a two dimensional surface. Once this is achieved and if desired, students can adopt a more sculptural approach by building wire armatures to be cemented and ultimately mosaiced. All levels of experience welcome. NB A materials fee of $50 is payable to Janet on the first day of the course.

Painting and drawing, a visual voice

Painting the Australian landscape

What does the contemporary landscape look like? The aim of this course is to explore an alternative approach to how the Australian landscape can be conceptualised and developed in paintings. Starting from a non-representational form to acute observations of environmental conditions, art works will be studies of exploration and experimentation within the landscape genre. We will begin the first few sessions using acrylic paint on canvas and later introduce a broad range of mixed media material. Instructions will be given in colour composition and techniques. Recommended for Intermediate/Advanced (Beginning students are also welcome)

Portrait and figure painting

Participants in the course will be taught the elements of colour, pictorial composition and paint manipulation to enable them to record their observations of the face and figure in an interesting and expressive way. Sculpture for mosaics

Learn to build a sculptural form of your choice beginning with a wire armature and then model the outer form in cement. You will then learn how to apply the mosaic. For example of this art form look up precedents on the web beginning with Niki de Saint Phalle and Antoni Gaudi. No previous experience is required. It is easier than you think. NB A materials fee of $50 is payable to Janet on the first day of the course.

The art of illustrating children’s books

This course will focus on the particular skills required for the illustration of children's books — including observation and invention, creating and sustaining characters, and storyboarding. Intermediate watercolour - Class Full

This class is the next step on from the beginners class, and would also be ideal for those who already have watercolour skills and would like to further their knowledge of water media techniques. This class deals with supplementary elements to transparent watercolour, gouache (opaque watercolour) combining both transparent opaque, pen and ink plus aquarelle pencils.
