Art for beginners

A course for the person who has always wanted to try drawing, printmaking or painting but felt uncertain about how to begin. Classes are structured around accessible & entertaining projects. There will be demonstrations of all techniques. No previous experience is necessary.

Child art studio: (8-12 years old)

1-4pm on 10 Saturdays from 25 July - $335+$25 materials fee =$360-
In this exciting and fun-filled studio workshop, children will be introduced to four areas of art practice: Drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Demonstration of techniques will be included in the course and the topics explored will be engaging and based on the interests of the child. This workshop is designed to equip participants with the skills to express ideas and to create great masterpieces! An interest in art is essential.

Conceptual development/drawing from the imagination.

Do you wish to build your skills in the area of conceptual development in visual art? The aim is to expand on the existing strengths and inclinations of the individual. Exploration of different techniques and materials will be employed to explore new possibilities. Prompts from literature, music and visual sources that relate to the individuals work will be used as tools to refine and extract greater awareness and a clearer direction with their work. The result will be a solid foundation in methods for building strong and consistent concepts in your future work.

Creative drawing

Folio preparation

The Portfolio Preparation classes are designed to assist students in developing their own working processes centered on visual creativity and the preparation of a portfolio for submission to an Art School or a similar course of study. Introduction to oil

This is an introductory class that covers a range of different themes including landscape, still life and figurative painting. Students will be shown different techniques and ideas, including colour theory, and also introduced to the formative ideas that have been responsible for the development of painting in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Landscape painting intermediate/advanced

This course is aimed for continuing or new students interested in developing their painting and observational skills further within the landscape genre. The lessons are structured to reinforce student’s abilities as well as expand on their practical knowledge. While some lessons will be given in the studio, others will be on location within the natural environment. A motor vehicle will be required for participating in field study painting trips.

Portrait and figure painting

Participants in the course will be taught the elements of colour, pictorial composition and paint manipulation to enable them to record their observations of the face and figure in an interesting and expressive way. Students may choose to work in oil, acrylic or gouache, and in addition to these materials will require charcoal or pencil for drawing studies. Recommended for all levels of experience.

Sculpture for mosaics

Session Full: 6-9pm on 15 Wednesdays from 8 July - $500
Learn to build a sculptural form of your choice beginning with a wire armature and then model the outer form in cement. You will then learn how to apply the mosaic finishing with the grout. For examples of this art form google Niki de Saint Phalle, and Antoni Gaudi, Alhambra, Ravena and Kaffe Fassett.

The art of illustrating children’s books

This class will give you a complete grounding in the medium of water colour. A complete explanation, materials and techniques will be given to you along with simple still life projects that give insight and expertise to the beginner or those who would like to “brush up” on basic watercolour skills.

Intermediate watercolour

This class is the next step on from the beginners class, and would also be ideal for those who already have watercolour skills and would like to further their knowledge of water media techniques. This class deals with supplementary elements to transparent watercolour, gouache (opaque watercolour) combining both transparent opaque, pen and ink plus aquarelle pencils.
