Jewellery fabrication - Form and paint

Building forms through the techniques of die forming and doming to make three dimensional objects such as brooch, earring and pendant. Following with forms, you will also know a technique of color pencil on metals to create beautiful decoration on your jewellery.

Course outline

  • Die forming and doming – creating your jewellery forms
  • accomplish basic technical processes: cutting, joining, forming, finishing and surface embellishment
  • transfer designs or sketches to metal
  • Color pencil on metals – creating your own color on jewellery

Learning outcomes:

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • create three dimensional jewellery and objects by hand
  • accomplish basic technical processes: cutting, joining, forming, finishing and surface embellishment
  • transfer designs or sketches to metal
  • have general reviews about jewelry and metals historically and culturally
  • take the challenge to explore possibilities

Who should enrol

This course is open to anyone interested to explore jewellery making.

Materials

Students will need to purchase personal protective equipment including safety glasses and a dusk mask and bring these to class each week.  Suitable clothing and sturdy covered shoes are required within the Gold and silversmithing workshop. Long hair should be tied up. 
Students should also bring a long a sketchbook and/or notebook, pencil and extra fine permanent marker for drawing onto metal.

Presenter

Bifei Cao: Bifei is an accomplished metalsmith whose unique sculptures utilize materials that he hopes will capture the attention of the viewer and engage them in a dialogue with the work itself.

Bifei holds a BA in Fashion Design and Sculptural Metals at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology and his MA in Chinese Traditional Metalsmithing at the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University. He has been in the United States studying at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he recently earned his MFA in Jewelry and Metals.
