This class will begin by focussing on drawing as an essential foundation in creative work. In the first half of the course you will look at the range of graphite pencils, different ways to use them such as hatching, shading and stippling and develop drawing skills looking at basic shapes, angles and construction lines. You will learn how to render lights and darks, positives and negatives. There will be practice with quick sketches, line drawing, enlarging, surface texture, cast shadow and reflected light.
In the second half of the course you will work with watercolour beginning with colour sketches and a study of basic colour theory and mixing. Further techniques will include watercolour over pencil, transparent glazing, working into wet and combinations of these to create finished works.
At the end of this course you should:
- Have skills with a range of pencils and drawing techniques and will understand the process from quick sketches to completed drawing.
- Have an understanding of basic colour theory and skills in painting with watercolour using several different techniques.
- Know the steps involved in working towards a completed drawing or painting.
