The fundamentals of drawing

Discover the experience of drawing in this course designed to provide you with the fundamental perceptual skills needed to see and interpret the visual world. This course is excellent for both beginners and returning students.

Course outline

  • Week 1: Introduction to media, using an easel, responding to drawing, contour drawing
  • Week 2: Experimenting with media, modelling using line and cross contour drawing, exploring texture
  • Week 3: Modelling using line and mass, spatial relationships
  • Week 4: Positive and negative space, view finders/formatting, composition
  • Week 5: Principles of design, tonal scales, cross-hatching techniques
  • Week 6: Organisation/structure, tonal and spatial variation, ‘Ghost Drawings’
  • Week 7: Perspective, measurement and proportion
  • Week 8: Experimenting with mixed media, drawing from memory and imagination, thematic development

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you should:

  • have an understand and apply the five perceptual skills of drawing
  • be able to consider and apply theoretical factors involved in organizing visual elements
  • be able to experiment with various media and experimental approaches to drawing
  • be able to investigate a single form-idea
  • have an appreciation of a diverse range of drawing techniques and concepts

Who should enrol

This course is open to both beginners and intermediate students who wish to develop and extend their drawing skills.

Materials

You will need to bring along the following:

  • 4 large (A2) sheets of cartridge paper or newsprint each lesson
  • a selection of charcoal sticks, a 2B & 4B pencil, a hard rubber, clips, tape or pins
  • an A3 drawing pad
  • Any drawing media you wish to use ie.- coloured pencils, pastels, brushes & ink (don’t bring to the first workshop)
