2009 University Preparation Scheme

Enrolments for Semester One open 3 December

Approved CCE UPS Courses

UPS Workshops

The University Preparation Scheme at ANU
University Preparation Scheme (UPS) courses can provide mature age people (21 years or more) with a qualification which allows them to compete for a place at ANU or some other universities.

Anyone who is 21 years of age or more by 1 March 2010 and possesses permanent Australian residency status is eligible to enrol in UPS in 2009.

UPS enables you to develop the necessary academic skills for tertiary study, gain confidence in the tertiary environment and recognise the level of scholarship and commitment necessary for successful university study. Assessment is based on performance during the course and your result from the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).

Completing these courses does not guarantee you entry to University, but does give you a qualification to compete for a place. UPS courses cannot be included in, or credited toward, a degree program at the University. Successful applicants undertaking Faculty-based courses MAY receive exemptions for first year undergraduate courses completed through UPS but this should be discussed with the Faculty concerned, not CCE.

The cost of enrolment is $795 per CCE based course and $400 per Faculty-based course. There are no discounts on UPS fees and the full fee is required with enrolment.

Candidates must enrol in ONE CCE based course OR TWO Faculty-based courses from the following categories:

(a) Approved CCE courses
• See the list below.

(b) Approved Arts or Asian Studies Faculty courses
• See the list below.

(a) Approved CCE UPS courses

Introduction to philosophy
Walter Kudrycz
6-8pm on 13 Tuesdays and 13 Thursdays from 21 July - $795 no discount
Philosophy is the study of big questions – what we can know, why we are here, and how we should live; in short, about life, the universe and everything. To understand key philosophical issues – and to have some fun – we’ll draw examples from real life, books, and movies. The reasoning and writing skills gained during the course will provide a solid foundation for university study.

What is intelligence? Are people’s experiences more important than their biology in shaping their behaviour? How do we remember things? Why do many people hate other races? How does the brain work? What is depression? What does it mean to be rational and how could this be measured? This course will shed light on each of these questions and many others. It will provide a firm foundation for undergraduate study at the ANU.
