About the UPS

University Preparation Scheme

The University Preparation Scheme (UPS) is designed to allow mature age people (aged 21 years or more) to compete for access to ANU degree courses. Such students will either:
not meet formal entry requirements
have qualifications which are are out of date
be attempting to "rehabilitate" their studies after unsuccessful tertiary study

Courses in the University Preparation Scheme have been recognised as providing a suitable means of entry to some bachelor degree studies. These are not special matriculation courses, nor will they necessarily be recognised by other tertiary institutions for admission purposes.

UPS courses are also open to general interest students.

Who can join the UPS?
Mature-age entry to the ANU is potentially open to anyone 21 years and older in the year they start undergraduate study and who possesses permanent Australian residency status.

What does it cost?
The cost of enrolment in 2008 is $795 per CCE based course and $400 per Faculty-based course. There are no discounts on UPS fees and the full fee is required with enrolment.

* Students have the option of enrolling in an additional workshops to assist there study or to prepare for the STAT exam. The cost of participating in these courses is not included in the UPS fee. In addition there is a fee when applying for the STAT exam. Please contat UAC directly for information on STAT fees.

What is the duration of UPS courses?
The UPS consists of 52 hours of tuition and is offered in two separate one-semester programs. Each semester long programs are over 13 weeks and two nights a week.

Where and when are classes held?
Most classes are held on the ANU Campus on weekday evenings.

What is the enrolment procedure?
UPS courses are advertised in the CCE Course Guide, an insert in The Canberra Times, in late November, or early June or from the CCE website.

How do I obtain an ANU Student Number
Unfortunately, UPS students are not eligible for an ANU student number. However, you may be able to apply for an affiliate number for the duration of your UPS study. For those undertaking Faculty-based courses please apply directly through your lecturer or the Faculty administrator. For those undertaking CCE based UPS courses please apply to email: enquiries.cce@anu.edu.au or phone 6125 4580.

How are UPS students assessed
There are two components to UPS assessment. Students are assessed on their performance in the course by the course tutor, and also receive a score after sitting the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) (Multichoice test). The two components are merged into one final assessment rating on completion of the course.

How much homework will I be required to undertake
In most cases you will be required to undertake approximately the same amount of study at home as you are completing in class. However, this may vary from course to course.

How the UPS works at the ANU
UPS course enrolments are administered by the CCE. You may enrol in an approved CCE unit or a Faculty-based UPS approved unit(s).

All UPS candidates must enrol in and satisfy all course requirements (as assessed by the tutor). Candidates must also sit the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) (Multichoice test). It is the students responsibility to complete all application requirements for the STAT obtainable in the UAC Guide published in August each year (see UAC entry below).

The courses are intended primarily as a means of developing the academic skills and confidence necessary to successfully undertake undergraduate studies.

Applicants applying for admission through UPS will be ranked on the tutor’s assessment plus the STAT result and no other qualifications will be considered. Applicants who already hold qualifications which satisfy admission requirements may wish to undertake a UPS unit as means of developing the academic skills and confidence necessary to successfully undertake undergraduate studies. Students who think they may already hold qualifications that satisfy admission requirements should check their eligibility with the ANU Admissions Office, 6125 3046/5594.

Students who choose to undertake more than one UPS unit (eg Mathematics Bridging and a CCE unit) will have their results considered by the ANU Admissions Standards Committee in conjunction with their STAT result.

For further information on application procedures and copies of course guides contact the Admissions Office; 6125 3046/5594; email; admiss.enq@anu.edu.au or call at the Student Enquiry counter in the Pauline Griffin Building, Ellery Crescent (Building 11).

The courses are intended primarily as a means of developing the academic skills and confidence necessary to successfully undertake undergraduate studies.

Universities Admission Centre (UAC)
Application forms to enter university and registration forms for the STAT are obtained by purchasing a copy of the UAC Guide available from the campus bookshops or local newsagencies. These are available from August each year.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL THAT ALL UPS STUDENTS COMPLETE BOTH FORMS FOUND INSIDE THE UAC GUIDE, IE APPLICATION FOR ENTRY TO UNIVERSITY AND REGISTRATION FOR STAT, AND MAIL THEM TO UAC BY THE DUE DATES. Please contact UAC directly for current STAT exam fees.

Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
The second component of UPS assessment is a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). This is a scholastic aptitude test that all ANU UPS students are compelled to sit towards the end of their UPS year. Students will register for the STAT as part of their application for admission to the ANU. A registration fee is applicable.

If you have completed a UPS recognized course with ANU you are required to sit the Multiple Choice section of the STAT exam only to complete your UPS requirement. To register for the STAT please contact the University Admissions Centre (UAC) Sydney on 02 97520200 Website: www.uac.edu.au

Faculty Prerequisites and Mathematics Bridging Courses
UPS participants should note that if intending to apply for admission to a degree course in Information Technology and for some subjects in the Science Faculty a mathematics prerequisite may be required in addition to the UPS unit. Please also note that although the Faculty of Economics and Commerce degree courses no longer have a mathematics prerequisite, it will be assumed that applicants will have a knowledge of the specified mathematics at the level of an ACT Advanced Mathematics major, of NSW 2 unit Mathematics.

The following Mathematics Bridging Modules are available as part of the UPS program:

Maths Bridging Module 1 has an emphasis on algebra.
Maths Bridging Module 2 has an emphasis on calculus.
Maths Bridging Module 3 has an emphasis on trigonometry.

If you are intending on undertaking Maths Bridging as a UPS unit you must contact the ANU Admissions Manager on (02) 6125 2260 for advice on what module sequence to undertake.

For information on Maths Bridging Courses contact ANU College on (02) 6125 5000 or the ANU Mathematics Department on (02) 6125 4476

Chemistry prerequisites
ANU will be offering 2 courses in Science, Bachelor of Biotechnology and Bachelor of Medical Science. Please note that both of these courses have a Chemistry prerequisite of an ACT Chemistry Major, or NSW 2unit Chemistry. Students interested in undertaking one of these courses should contact the Admissions Office on 6125 5594 BEFORE undertaking the UPS program to discuss this prerequisite as it is not possible to meet the prerequisite through the UPS program.

Approved CCE units
Each unit has 52 hours of study with either one or two two-hour sessions per week. Please click here for more details, or you may phone the CCE on 6125 2892.

Workshops for UPS students

These workshops are not a compulsory component of the scheme but are provided as optional units for an additional fee. Workshops will also be advertised in the CCE Course Guide available in late May.

Workshops available during semester 1 and semester 2 include:

Basic maths for STAT
Essay writing workshops
Critical thinking workshops
STAT preparation workshops
