Intermediate Spanish 1 is designed for those who have successfully completed Beginning Spanish 3, or equivalent. In this course you will continue to expand your previous knowledge and develop inter-cultural awareness.

Course outline

Each week you will be learn new vocabulary while participating in communicative activities and readings.

  • Topic 1: you will focus on past actions; 'preterite' tense of regular verbs; and knowing people, places and facts: conocer and saber
  • Topic 2: you will learn how to refer to people already mentioned, including personal direct object pronouns. There will be further work on talking about past actions and 'preterite' tense of regular verbs
  • Topic 3: you will be introduced to relating to past events; verbs with irregular 'preterite' forms; and stem-changing verbs in the 'preterite'
  • Topic 4: you will work on reporting the past; and indirect object pronouns with 'decir', expressing 'argo: hacer' and time
  • Topic 5: you will focus on referring to objects already mentioned in relation to impersonal direct object pronouns; 'lo, la, los, and las'. You will then work on expressing likes and the verbs: 'gustar' and 'encantar'.
  • Topic 6: you will begin work on making negative statements and questions such as 'no' and 'never'. You will then learn how about the 'impersonal se' - expressing one or you.
  • Topic 7: you will continue work on using stem-changing verbs like 'pedir' and 'server'. Then you will work on the present tense and 'preterite' forms.
  • Topic 8: you will focus on describing family relationships; the reciprocal reflective verbs: 'parecerse' and 'ilevarse'; and expressing for, from to whom: prepositions + pronouns
  • Topic 9: you will learn how to describe what you used to do and the imperfect tense
  • Topic 10: you will be introduced to describing what you were going to do, including the imperfect tense of 'ir + a' + infinitive

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • participate in a basic conversation
  • provide basic personal information
  • demonstrate understanding of a written information text
  • give basic spoken information about people and places
  • give basic spoken information about specific needs
  • demonstrate understanding of basic spoken information
  • complete a form
  • write a short message
  • follow basic directions.

This course is designed for those who have completed Beginning Spanish 3 or approximately 60 hours of equivalent study.
